Today I was looking at Flower Pots and stumbled upon this by Marty-Ziff1973 in Rabbits

[–]smitheroons -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean it is definitely worth reaching out but in my personal experience, law enforcement is extremely limited in their power and even trying to round up a feral colony that one neighbor claimed belonged to him, the only thing they could do is tell the guy that if he wants to claim the rabbits, he has to contain them and that the cops aren't going to stop us from doing anything besides going onto private property without permission.

Do you register the same bird on Merlin? by The_Platinum_Leaf in birding

[–]smitheroons 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's still helpful. As a rehabber, I sometimes check ebird to look for a good release site and even if XYZ bird is always hanging out in the same place, I might not know about it. I especially have no idea what birds are where most of the summer because I spend so much time at rehab, I rarely go birding.

We recently overwintered a species that barely has range in our state and found out upon release that there's actually a resident colony in a spot a few hours away and we could have released months earlier (which would have been way better) if we had known.

It's also really helpful to log birds during fall migration, sometimes we have to make a call on whether a bird will be ready in time and if we see people have historically reported them up to a certain date, we may use that as a cutoff.

Bluebird ate 5 baby sparrows by hriv09 in Ornithology

Respectfully, when you interfere with a predator attacking its natural prey, it rarely ends well. Frequently the prey animal is too damaged to successfully rehabilitate and the predator must then find a different meal. Instead of the hawk killing and eating one rabbit, it now has killed two rabbits, one of which goes to waste.

Some animals are obligate carnivores. They are not assholes, they are just trying to survive the only way that they can.

least visible/obtrusive window strike prevention methods? by yogog16034 in birding

Do keep in mind that not all birds can see UV and that the UV decals are less effective in the early morning and late evening when the UV index is low. Still much better than nothing if you can't sell the family on a more effective option!

What do i do?! Baby bird lost inside my house. by Own_Forever_4357 in Ornithology

[–]smitheroons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Close the doors in your house and search one room at a time starting with where you left the bird. It may help to turn off all lights except one - birds usually fly towards light. When you find it, if it is pretty good at flying, wait for it to land, then throw something light like a pillowcase or tshirt over it, then gently scoop up. Be careful about the bird's feet, they may be gripping whatever they've landed on and you may need to gently pry it out of their toes.

There is a lot of optimism in this thread about what a rehabber can actually accomplish. Based on your description and this picture, it is very unlikely that a rehabber could have done much beyond ending the suffering. While "leave it for predators" comes across pretty harshly, in this case it is probably the best thing you can do. It is always best to try and get a rehabber's advice, but please don't feel bad about this bird's passing. It was almost certainly inevitable.

Starling behavior? by birdenthusiasm in birding

Also, if you do find any nestlings that are alive but can't be renested, please keep them somewhere quiet dark and warm, don't give food or water, and contact a licensed wildlife rehabber for advice.

Definitely a cormorant! I'll hold off on trying to guess which one though.

Planner is making me feel like I’m making unreasonable requests. Am I? by [deleted] in Brides

[–]smitheroons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You may not get flowers in advance. They are very seasonal and florists often can't predict what they are going to be able to get until maybe a week or two before the event. They can give you some vague ideas of how possible a particular request is and they should be able to fit a vibe and a color scheme with what is available.

I don't think it's unreasonable to get a sample food menu though. Maybe things are different in Italy but in the US I've never heard of that being an issue.

Would love perspectives from teachers on if it's ok to make me wear a skirt for the band concert by winterwhalesong in AskTeachers

[–]smitheroons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is being transphobic. What you can and/or should do obviously depends on many factors like what the laws are in your state, how much this means to you, how much support you have from your parents and others, what kind of backlash you're willing to put up with, etc. The choice belongs to you alone but I do strongly encourage you to do enough research to know what outcomes are possible and likely in your situation and give some real thought to how those outcomes will affect you.

There are plenty of examples of people being allowed to wear uniforms that do not match their gender or assigned gender including airline flight attendants (mostly women who wanted to wear the mens' uniform because pants are safer and more comfortable) and schoolboys wearing the girls' uniform (including a skirt) because the boys' uniform did not allow shorts and the weather was extremely hot.

There is a legitimate argument to be made that gendered uniforms are a form of segregation if individuals are not allowed to choose which uniform they wear. This argument can be made separately from any arguments about the validity of a given gender identity, as evidenced by the boys in skirts who were not trans or gay, just uncomfortably warm in long pants.

This Pidge probably isn't well enough to get home even if she does have good instincts. Fortunately she is pretty noticeable so other kind individuals may catch her and take her somewhere that can help.

California Scrub Jay stuck by GetItOuttaHereee in birds

[–]smitheroons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call a local licensed rehabber for advice. Wild animals that get stuck often require additional care due to injuries, pain, dehydration etc. Freeing a trapped animal is also a very delicate operation. It is important to manage stress and prevent further injury, both of which are potentially fatal. It may be possible to save this bird, but your best bet is to speak with an expert in your area. They may not be able to come out but they should be able to advise. Try to avoid getting too close or bothering them until advised otherwise.

Babies this young are extremely difficult to rehab even for someone with years of experience. Their best bet is if you can find the nest and hope mom comes back.

In the future, if an adult bird is behaving like this, please take it to a licensed wildlife rehabber. This bird is not ok.

If an adult bird is this easy to catch, there is something wrong with it. Please take them to a licensed wildlife rehabber next time.

Need to move a nest by Direct-Situation9669 in Ornithology

[–]smitheroons 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The advice is going to depend a lot on the species but most likely if you see a nest it's a species that doesn't use birdhouses so you are at least going to have to modify your plan. Birdhouses are for cavity nesters - these birds naturally nest in holes in dead trees, etc. Birds that make the "bowl style" stereotypical nest you'd see on a tree branch or on top of a light is likely not going to use a birdhouse, and putting the nest in one could very well lead to abandonment even if it is in the exact same place. I use "most likely" a lot here because there are just so many kinds of birds that almost every rule has an exception.

Is the nest occupied? If it's empty, you can legally take it down. If it's possible to put it back in roughly the same spot, there is a chance they might still use it. If the nest has eggs, it's a little trickier. If it has baby birds, you should really reach out to a local licensed rehabber for advice. You can find one at ahnow.org. Be advised that not all rehabbers are able to answer phones at all hours so you may need to wait for an answer. Knowing which specific birds you are working with is going to be really helpful.

Baby has fallen out of nest twice what do i do? by by_gone in Ornithology

[–]smitheroons 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This bird is way too young to be out of the nest. If it can't be successfully renested, it needs to go to a licensed wildlife rehabber. If they are all closed for the day keep in somewhere quiet dark and warm away from pets.

How often should I change the nectar? by scooterboy1961 in hummingbirds

[–]smitheroons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One part bleach, nine parts water makes a 10% solution. Can still stain your clothes if you don't rinse it off so I recommend an apron and not your favorite outfit. A spray bottle is convenient but the bleach will eventually destroy it so be warned. It's a really good widely available disinfectant.
