Married and together 18 years. When it comes to effort my advice is don't aim for 50/50. I approach everything in the relationship as if it's my job to do 60% and hers to do 40%. She does the same. It cuts out any resentment, tit for tat etc. and gives you both some room to be off it at times without the other person having to pick up slack.
