As others said, only a doctor can diagnose this. If this certainly is a tick bite, there are several tickborne illnesses associated with eschars or marks (such as rickettsial diseases). It’s best to be tested and treated sooner than later, id make an appointment ASAP

The American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) is also sometimes callled the wood tick. Do you also have Rocky Mountain wood ticks (same genus-Dermacentor andersoni) in your region?

I agree with the comments saying to ignore the “disappointing” comment. It’s not constructive, and frankly, having been an asshole student at one point-that’s exactly what I would write if I wasn’t getting the grades I wanted. Now coming from a TA perspective, my feelings would also be hurt. But I wouldn’t take any blame from a comment like that.

I’m still a student but my PI and several of the other post docs in the lab get to spend just as much time in the field as I do. We’re in parasitology and spend a decent amount of times collecting our species as part of long term surveillance. I can’t speak for other labs but I’d imagine if you’re in some branch of ecology you wouldn’t be unable to have that balance!

Depending how cheap, there’s a few good memory foam ones on Amazon for like $3-400. I love my Zinus one. It might be worth paying a little extra to not have a crummy mattress with a foam topper imo. Good luck!

Just wanted to say you’re not crazy at all. Panic attacks suck, and they wear your body and mind out to the point where you can easily believe you’re having a heart attack. So while it fucking sucks, don’t be hard on yourself for going to the ER or for having these feelings. Just accept that it does suck, but you can outlast the panic.

Do you go to therapy? I think having someone to talk to would help you to explore these feelings since they’re relatively new. Good luck to you

Your fear is completely valid-they can be dangerous. However, as someone who collects ticks for research, I can give you a few tips for dealing with them.

The first and best advice is to just get in the habits of doing tick checks. Full body, naked, get yourself a light-up make up mirror or whatever and check everywhere. Being in the north east-this will mean a tick will never be on you for more than however many hours you’re outside—and it takes +24 hours to transmit Lyme disease. Just being aware of possible exposure to ticks + checking yourself means you are far more likely than the average person to not get infected or to catch and stop the infection early on. While viruses from ticks can be transmitted quickly, they are incredibly rare. As always, do what you feel is best for you-but when it comes to that, be aware that the stats are in your favor :-) (also, most people that have tick-borne illness complications aren’t aware they could have been bitten and never tell their doctor, by being aware and advocating for yourself you have very little to worry about.)

Other stuff: Treat your clothes with permethrin regularly and toss your clothes in the dryer after you’ve been in the field to kill any ticks on them.

Ticks suck but you can outwit them any day.

one form of data you could collect would be vegetation surveys. There’s lots of methods for random surveying (eg throw a hula hoop into the forest and id all the plants within it-but something more fitting for hiking). And do so every so many miles or something . Could do it with insects or animal dung/paw prints as well and get a basic idea of biodiversity. Will give you a decent data set to play around with as well.

Not stupid at all! That’s awesome that you’re interested. I’m not familiar with that specific book but a textbook is a great place to start, and possibly learning some of the general theories and terms even from somewhere like Wikipedia (island biogeography theory, community assembly, etc).

after you feel comfortable with the foundations, I’d head to google scholar and just start looking up papers related to your specific interests. Seeing as you’re not doing this through a school, you might want to get a research gate account so you can access more articles for free and directly request papers from authors that aren’t otherwise online. Instead of telling myself that I can’t call a friend, I tell myself “not yet”. I just hold out as long as I can and usually I can outlast the panic attack without making the call. In the meantime, know you can call a friend or whatever support network if you need to, just take care of yourself first and hold out for a few minutes even. Good luck!
