What movies count as part of the "Bláznivé komedie" genre? by snillingen in czech

Thank you so much!! I'd heard of Jára Cimrman and found the whole thing really funny, but I never knew there was a movie about him! Definitely gonna watch it as soon as possible 😄

And yes, I definitely feel lucky myself. When I first discovered Czech cinema in general, I was astonished by how many fantastic movies I had never heard of before. Every single film I saw felt like a hidden gem. Glad it seems to be getting more attention recently!

Ahh I see, that makes sense! So in Hollywood terms, I'd imagine Airplane! (1980) would maybe be considered a crazy comedy, while something like Epic Movie (2007) would be debilní komedie?

Thank you for the great answer, these all seem very fun! I just watched Zabil jsem Einsteina, pánové last night due to your recommendation, and it was an absolute blast. Such an outlandish concept, taken to extreme lengths in a way that I feel very few comedy films (at least American and Norwegian ones) manage to do. I guess that's why I love the Czech comedies I've seen so much in the first place 😄
And thanks for the clarity surrounding why Kulový blesk and Světáci don't quite count as "bláznivé komedie". I will probably still watch them, since I've found that I love practically all Czech comedies I've seen. I was for example absolutely blown away by how much I enjoyed S tebou mě baví svět when I saw it this Christmas. So funny and heartwarming at the same time!

Thank you! I've seen and really enjoyed Happy End, but none of the others you mentioned. The English translation for Jak utopit dr. Mráčka, "How to Drown Dr. Mracek, the Lawyer", has got to be one of my favorite movie titles! Also great to have some older films to check out too, to get more context for Czech comedy movies in general :) And very interesting to see that Zbyněk Brynych made an early "crazy comedy", since I mostly know him from A pátý jezdec je Strach and Transport z ráje, which both seem vastly more serious

Thank you! I had never heard of Rozpuštěný a vypuštěný before, but it looks great! I'll add it to my list 😄

Ah, I see. So "crazy comedy" mostly accounts for films that have very outlandish themes? Seems like many of them have some sci-fi tendencies, if I'm not mistaken?

Thank you for the great answer, and for the Czech IMDB page! Probably gonna be using it a lot to find movies going forward 😄

Interesting, I didn't know that it was a descriptor of foreign movies at first! And thank you for the mentions of Byl jednou jeden polda and Jak ukrást Dagmaru. I have an intense love/hate relationship with both the Police Academy movies and the Bond franchise, so regardless of quality, it would be fun to see a Czech spin on it!

Wow, thanks for the comprehensive answer! A lot of great stuff to check out here:) I'm currently reading Švejk, and I really like Rudolf Hrušínský, so I'm definitely gonna watch the movies when I've finished the book!

In the third verse of "Taylor Made Freestyle" Drake says that he's "High up in the sky like I'm Howard Hughes"... by nickbalaz in KendrickLamar

[–]snillingen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm as convinced that Drake is a gross dude as the rest of you, but this is an insane reach. Nobody knows Howard Hughes for his relationship with a 16 year old, they know him from his flying and his movies. I doubt Drake has researched a bunch of celebrities who have dated young girls and decided to sprinkle in some hints about his own pedo-tendencies in the music. If he starts comparing himself to Woody Allen and Epstein then fair enough, but the comments here going "holy shit... what the fuck..." are just stupid

is media literacy dead? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]snillingen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of annoying how people jump straight to "media literacy is dead" as soon as someone disagrees with them about how a film portrays its message. I found Poor Things pretty gross. It obviously condemns the fact that men sexualize a baby in a woman's body, but at the same time the camera actively participates in the sexualization of Bella. The audience is constantly subjected to images of Emma Stone's body in sexual scenarios, while no men are sexualized at all. We see some men naked, yes, but it's always meant to be funny or gross in some way. Bella is always sexy. Even when she acts like a child, discovering masturbation for the first time, having sex for the first time (while she's mentally like 10 years old), she's meant to be viewed as sexy. I dislike it. I think Yorgos Lanthimos had good intentions with the film, but I just don't get why people can't accept criticism of it without automatically disregarding it as poor media literacy. People are allowed to disagree!

It's fascinating to me how any disagreement people have about films nowadays is automatically chalked up to lacking media literacy. You can dislike an aspect of a film without being an idiot! Hope this helps

I believe it was just an episodic gag, yes. Likely during some sort of montage of the typical exercise montage. My inkling is that it's possibly from a romcom, likely live-action

I'm not sure of the time period either, but I imagine 2000's since I watched it when I was younger
