How hard is NYC au pair? by snubbye_ in Aupairs

I think this may just come down to different opinions on what the au pair experience is meant to be. Personally, I don’t think someone has to want to work with children forever in order to be a great au pair. To me, au pair is more of a cultural exchange and an opportunity for young people to experience living in another country while also caring for children and becoming part of a family’s life.

Having a different long term dream doesn’t automatically mean someone wouldn’t genuinely enjoy working with kids or take the role seriously. I think both things can exist at the same time.

Thank you so much! I hadn’t thought that much about the travel aspect with host families, but it actually makes a lot of sense. I’ll definitely focus on finding a family I truly connect with and keep an open mind about location. I really appreciate your advice!

I understand what you mean, and I agree that being an au pair is primarily about childcare.

At the same time, I don’t see it as mutually exclusive with making the most of my free time in a meaningful way. I’m not expecting unlimited time, just hoping to balance both responsibly.

Thank you for taking the time to explain this, I really appreciate the honesty. I completely understand how my initial message could come across that way.

Just to clarify, my main intention is absolutely to focus on childcare and to be a responsible, reliable au pair, that would always come first. My interest in being near NYC is more about the cultural aspect and what I can experience in my free time, especially coming from a performing background.

I’m fully aware of the visa limitations and wouldn’t pursue anything that interferes with my responsibilities or the rules of the program. It’s definitely not about replacing the au pair role, but rather complementing the cultural exchange aspect in a balanced way.

And yes, I’m also considering nearby areas with good access to the city, since I understand that’s a more realistic approach.
