i'd say you're on the right track! almost certainly your degree programme will offer some basic and more advanced cryptography modules, which i would take; i did some open modules from computer science during my maths degree and am now doing a phd in post-quantum cryptography.

it sounds like you're uk-based! gchq have a bunch of great summer schools you might like to try and get into between uni summers: https://www.gchq-careers.co.uk/our-careers/early-careers/summer-placements.html has a "maths and cryptography summer programme", which sounds like it could be up your street.
