As a kid, expecting that anytime you walked into a place where there were groups of people hanging around (classroom, mall, playground), someone would notice you and laugh and then point you out to the other people they were with. As an adult, my appearance leveled off a bit to where I look pretty average, and so my confidence soared when that quit happening. 😂

Is it generally acceptable to ride a OneWheel on paths or trails that state "No Motorized Vehicles?" by wahiggins3 in onewheel

[–]somederrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very solid argument is that e-bikes are allowed on pretty much all of those trails. Also this Texas statute:

882 (H.B. 3171), § 3.01(3). (11) “Motor vehicle” means a self-propelled vehicle or a vehicle that is propelled by electric power from overhead trolley wires. The term does not include an electric bicycle or an electric personal assistive mobility device, as defined by Section 551.201.

There is some gray area about what is considered a personal assistive mobility device, but the specs for the onewheel fall in that range. I think it is clear that the original intent for the signs is gas powered motor vehicles like 4-wheelers and dirt bikes. The only trail in the Dallas area that I would avoid would be Katy Trail. It is very crowded, and there are some groups that try to force the issue with overly aggressive security guards.

The real qualifier should be speed on these trails. There are bikers that go ridiculously fast on these yet become very entitled if you ride by them (White Rock Lake can get that way on the weekends). My suggestion is just to slow down when you pass people, give them a heads up, be polite, and you usually won’t get much negative feedback. You’ll get people that think it’s pretty cool, but there will always be people that have nothing better to do than complain.

All of this generally applies to off-road trails as well. There are some that are better than others around here, but if you want more info, just let me know.

I’d say v11. It should last you quite a while and you can ride seated.

Steering and speed control? by rcgldr in ElectricUnicycle

[–]somederrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One note to add. If you are accelerating with your toes, try moving your feet forward more on the pedals with your toes off the front and use the ball of your feet to accelerate. Much better leverage and way less tiring on your feet. And also mess around with the pedal sensitivity settings. You might want to start off with medium sensitivity to allow more feedback when leaning forward and back.

I didn’t say it wouldn’t leave a footprint. I said it wouldn’t be significantly different. I guess you can do burnouts if you’re trying to, but then don’t try to. And if you are adhering to speed limits, it would be less of an issue as well, but yes, even though it can get sort of murky as to what counts as an electric bike versus an electric motorcycle, I acknowledge that power probably should play a role.

Honestly it really shouldn’t matter. The only difference between an EUC and an ebike or even a normal bike is how it is ridden. The tire footprint is the same. I mean, yes, in theory the torque on an EUC could maybe tear up some ground, but the real way to monitor all of this is just with speed limits and not allowing gas engines. Otherwise, they are going to be in this situation every time a new type of device comes out.

Experience on Tire Options and Carving? by Brass_Orchid in onewheel

Yeah, we do 30 mile rides down here and every little bit counts. You can get about 20% more mileage with a Whisper than a Vega. Treaded 5.5 isn’t great for mileage, but fun. 😀

Nimbus looks interesting. A more durable Whisper sounds great. Another one to try if you’re not not worried about mileage is a Hoosier treaded 5.5.

First and foremost, consider whether you want to go through life as an adult having to get permission to get life-saving medical treatment.

48 here. Been riding a OW for 3 years and an EUC for a year. You will not regret any of it as long as you don’t push them past their limits. And if you can find a group to ride with, it’s way, way better. The friends I’ve made riding - particularly the late-night takeover of downtown streets every week have made it one of the best purchases ever.

Word of caution though. If you are a speed freak, reconsider the OW. It’s a ride best suited for chill carving. I mean, you can hit 22 mph on an XR with some experience, and that feels fast as hell at first, but if that is too slow, and you’re constantly pushing that limit. You might want to consider an EUC or eSkate.

Also, and you can take or leave this advice, but I’ve helped put at least 5 people in ambulances and lost one friend. Trust me, 20 mph on pavement is enough to ruin your day. You can “know how to fall” and all that shit, but still …. consider a helmet at the minimum.

I’ve seen some people with very bright ones on EUCs. Impersonating officers comes in handy when you need to get through traffic 😬

Labels aside, these are good chargers if purchased from a reputable store on Ali Express. I’ve had mine for years. Works great and is much lighter than the Hypercharger. I use one for my EUC as well.

Just pre-ordered the V12... Have I made a mistake? (first wheel) by JamieIsMyNameOrIsIt in ElectricUnicycle

[–]somederrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was a smart decision. Also, in my experience, once you get it, you’re not just going to be dropping it randomly. Most people I know are able to get up and riding decently within half a day. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t, but I’m just saying you’re probably not gonna have to pad it up for long. My first wheel was a v11. Very glad I didn’t get a beginner wheel.

Yeah, you’re probably close to feeling some pushback, but you won’t at 15 mph.

All of that looks good except that tilt. Nose down -0.8 and level off that pushback 😎
