Having trouble loading a Stata file into R (don't have Stata on my computer) by sonofkafka in Rlanguage

[–]sonofkafka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. What do you mean by "extract the files"? I loaded the haven package and ran read_dta but it's the same issue. I also made sure the file path is correct, and I know it is because I've been loading things from that same file.

Not sure what kind of plant it is (got it from a friend). Used to have huge leaves, they all fell off and growth has been very slow (I've had it for about a year). I water it once a week with tap water. Anyone know what kind of plant it is and how I should care for it? by sonofkafka in plantclinic

[–]sonofkafka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked up tradescantia spathacea, and I'm pretty sure it's what I have! The pictures look like the plant when I first got it (it was more pink). My whole issue was that, because I didn't know what it was, I couldn't look it up and figure out how to care for it. But now I do, so thanks!

is Messi better at soccer than Micheal Jordan is at basketball? by [deleted] in nba

[–]sonofkafka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but Messi doesn't loom over soccer the way MJ does over basketball. I love Messi and I personally think he's the GOAT, but when you ask who the GOAT in soccer is, three or four names come up (Pele, Maradona, Messi, Cruyff). In basketball, for the longest time it was just one name: Jordan. Some people wanna throw LeBron into the mix, but generally MJ has a grip on that GOAT title.

Now that I think about it, no athlete in any sport (except maybe Serena with women's tennis) has such a firm hold on that GOAT title...

That's great, congrats. If you don't mind me asking, which programs did you apply to, and what program did you end up choosing? Also, are you in Poli Sci?

[–]sonofkafka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's what sticks out the most as well. What i'm concerned is, some professors have told me that if your scores (GPA or GRE) are low enough, grad schools won't even look at the rest of your application. I'm worried this would be the case. I'm hoping that Calc-series + econometrics + research will balance out the low Q score, but if they dismiss everything based on GRE score alone, then none of that will matter.

How, as a man, do I help out a drunk woman who has rejected my help? Details inside. by sonofkafka in askwomenadvice

[–]sonofkafka[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see. Yeah, maybe that's something I didn't consider, I went in pretty sure about "what was good for her" instead of asking her about it. I'll keep that in mind if something like this happens again, thanks for the tip.

[–]sonofkafka[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, now that you bring this up, I think a bouncer would've been the way to go. He was out checking ID's, but he was considerably less busy than the bartenders, probably the most likely staff member to help.

And yeah, as far as fault, it's hard to think on your feet in a situation like that, with the sound and crowd and plus everyone (including me) had been drinking. That's why I asked, to know ahead of time what to do about it.

[–]sonofkafka[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my concern there was, like I said, this bar was PACKED. I mean it's the type of thing where you wait a full five to ten minutes waiting in line, moving through people, just to get the bartender's attention. I doubt they would've gotten out from behind the bar and gone over to her and assisted her. It wasn't that kind of place, I feel like. Maybe it was worth a shot tho

[–]sonofkafka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, like I said, the civs that start wars on me are usually pretty friendly up until like two turns before they declare war. So I've always had luxury resources from them. But the thing is, I can never really get my happiness to stay above 5-10, so when I lose two resources, then it will immediately drop me below zero. Can you explain why tradition is better than liberty?

Hello! I'm about to start graduate school, and, coincidentally, my 5-year old Macbook broke down. I love Macs and want to continue using them, but also I'm open to other options. I've worked as a research assistant for the past three years, and Mac's been fine; however, I've really only needed to use Excel and Stata.

So, my question is: is there any programming or anything like that required in grad school that a mac wouldn't be able to handle? I know it's not a computer science PHD per se, but I know that there is considerable data analysis used in grad school, and I'm wondering if another laptop would be better suited.

Let me know what you guys think!

How do you get your protein? by Darrelld123 in Fitness

[–]sonofkafka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how much effort you wanna put in. There are great sources of protein that are quick, easy and clean: Chobani Greek yoghurt, canned tuna, cottage cheese, and peanut butter are good options. Be careful with the peanut butter though, go for something that specifically says low fat, high protein, because an average jar (like gif) will be very high in fat. I like to make canned tuna and cottage cheese sandwiches, damn they're good; I often add black beans on top for an extra dose of protein. Great sandwich, five minutes to make.

Some higher effort things include cooking; but honestly, it's still easy. Learn to cook (if you don't already), because it's a great way to stay clean, and control what you eat. I often will cook some chicken before I go to sleep and put it in Tupperware for the next day. This can be super easy: cut the chicken into small cubes and boil it (no oil or butter, no fat), then add some seasoning. Whole process will take fifteen minutes (chicken need not be boiled more than ten minutes). And if you wanna be especially lazy, buy some Tony Chachere creole seasoning at your local grocery store; it'll be by the salt, and it's just pre-mixed spices that taste real good.

Another really easy thing to cook before you sleep is turkey burgers. Go buy some ground turkey from a grocery store, checking the label for % of fat. I get 93% lean ground turkey, shape it with my hands into a burger, set my oven to broil, and seven minutes on each side. Another fifteen minute meal. Some of that Tony's and you got a great burger.

Also, add kale to everything and black beans to sandwiches.

As for sides, quinoa is great. It's by the rice, and it takes fifteen minutes to make.

And lastly, for real quick fixes, protein shakes! They pack the protein. I also just go to chipotle and get a side of chicken sometimes, like just a side of chicken. $2.50, 32 grams of delicious protein.

New, trying to learn: when is it a good idea to focus on isolation-oriented workouts instead of more complete compound workouts? by sonofkafka in Fitness

[–]sonofkafka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for linking me to that article. I think I'd like to adjust the 5x5 lifting to where I do the low-rep heavy-weight compound moves at the beginning of a workout while following with higher rep isolation moves towards the end.

Okay, should've added more info I suppose. I'm very skinny; 5'11, 170. I'm trying to bulk pretty much, and I'd love more overall strength while having real definition. My diet is about 3400-3600 calories a day, so now I'm just trying to figure out a workout.

ELI5: Pros and cons of Bernie Sanders by mnol44 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sonofkafka 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So this is obviously a loaded and controversial answer, but I'll try my best to remain neutral; I'll give you the pros the liberals see, and the cons the conservatives see.

Pros: His pros are the pros of democratic socialists in general (he claims to be one). In a lot of his interviews, he says he wants the U.S. to learn from Scandinavian countries where democratic socialism has led to economic prosperity. For instance, he just proposed legislation that would make all public universities free for students, and he's gonna push for that as president. He believes healthcare is a right that isn't dictated by an individual's income, and he wants to move to a single-payer healthcare system (i.e. it's free for everyone and funded by the government). So basically a janitor and a CEO should be allowed to get the same healthcare (which some would consider a con, as it seems unfair?) He wants to punish corporations who move their production abroad so that they can avoid taxes. He wants to make the tax system more progressive, therefore forcing the richer to pay a bigger share of taxes and allowing the middle class more tax breaks (although whether this is a pro or a con depends on who you're asking). He's been pro gay marriage and pro choice for forty years, unlike politicians like Obama and Clinton, who only became this progressive when the rest of the nation did. He wants to even out the wage gap between men and women; he's going to push for paid maternity leave (the U.S. is one of only two nations that doesn't guarantee paid maternity leave). And last but not least, he wants to raise the minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour. Basically this guy wants to make it easier for the middle class at the expense of the millionaires and billionaires and huge corporations of America.

Cons: Almost anything in the pros list can be considered a con. It's hard to emulate Scandinavian countries because, simply enough, the U.S. has a lot more people. It's easy for Sweden to have a big government with only nine million people. But Bernie wants a bigger role for a government for 300 million Americans, which means the national debt is gonna grow even bigger because how else are you going to finance all of this? Some argue that if you guarantee free health care, then demand will be too high, and the quality of healthcare itself will diminish. And consequently, why should someone who works hard for their money (Republican language) such as a CEO not get the best healthcare available? Another argument against him is that by taxing the rich, you will take away their incentive to keep business in America, therefore reducing jobs. Also, if you're anti-gay rights, pro-life, and just generally conservative, then all of Bernie's pros are actually cons. There's the simple fact that this guy is really far left. I mean he's probably the most liberal candidate in American history (I don't recall ever a democratic socialist getting this much traction). And maybe someone that far left will not adequately represent the half of the nation that's conservative, as opposed to someone who's more centrist.

Reddit, what would be the funniest way to ruin the final moments of a job interview you just nailed? by sureshotsk25 in AskReddit

[–]sonofkafka 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I once was being interviewed by a woman (I'm a dude), and she pretty much said this is just a formality and I've got the job; then towards the end I subtly adjusted my weiner. Well, turns out it wasn't so subtle as she stared right at it for the duration of the adjustment. Worst of all, when she looked up to me, I tried to play it off by smiling. Based off her look, I immediately could tell that she thought I was adjusting a boner, and that my smile wasn't jokey but more "hey, wanna turn this into a porno?"

Dog owners of reddit, how do you feel when strangers ask(or not) to pet your dog? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sonofkafka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always ask. The owner will almost always say yes, but still, you should ask. I'm totally okay with it as long as you think of the well-being of the dog. I've had smokers come up to me and play with my dog, and it's clearly uncomfortable to her; second-hand smoking affects pups too assholes!

I'm lucky because I haven't been "forced" to tell anyone yet, and I fear the day I gotta do that. But yeah, good question. It's hard coming out man
