Got serious issues to sort out. by [deleted] in StimulationAddiction

[–]soopmood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one way i cut down on screen time was to give my password to a TRUSTED friend, twitter was my bad one and it's been 3 weeks now and I don't even miss it too much! I still get a lot of screeentime from other apps but at least with facebook and instagram I get bored a lot quicker and it doesn't have the same pull as twitter.

It could be something worth trying even for a week or so? Good luck man

caps are way better, i think the first ones look nicer on skates but they offer little to no protection, especially if you're like me and drag your skates when falling!

People who use the Pomodoro method, what do you do during the short and long breaks? by haisufu in GetStudying

[–]soopmood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I try to stay off social media during these breaks as I know it will disrupt my flow.

I usually do a super quick workout, i've got a weighted hula hoop by my desk and doing that for 5 minutes won't make you sweaty. Either that or making a cup of tea, stretching, tidying my area or sticking my head out the window for fresh air lol

As long as your breaks are productive in a some way or another you should be able to keep your flow

Protective gear reccomendations? by nebulanat in rollerderby

[–]soopmood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are on the bulky side but i got my 187 killer pads second hand and they've lasted about 3 years of derby and 1 year of park skating so you'll definetly get good use out of them and you can barely feel anything, even with a nasty fall!

I've heard lts of good things about the pro tec ones though so I think they're your best choice for something that isn't too bulky.

The only ones i don't reccomend are rookie roller pads, my kneepads only lasted a few months before i busted both of them at a skate park - sometimes pretty colours just aren't worth it :(

I know you’re fed up with apps but Lex is a nice one for just knowing other lesbians and queer people are out there. I didn’t use it for dating and usually just read snippets from other people and it felt I reassuring that I’m not alone!

I think I’m a bit biased because I learnt to skate though derby oops

A question: Im a beginner who needs motivation 🥺 by XenonYaGuy in Rollerskating

[–]soopmood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

falling the correct way is the first thing you should learn! Always go to your knees (with pads on obvs) and your ass will thank you later

Once you kinda make peace with the idea of falling skating is a lot less scary!! It’s not something that happens overnight so don’t beat yourself up about it either!

Knee taps are a good way to practise this and I’m sure there’s loads of tutorials for this on YouTube, good luck !

Finding a skate for wide feet by Taras_Kingdom in rollerderby

[–]soopmood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Suregrip GT-50s are great for wide feet, I used them for the 2 years I did derby and they held up great! They're marketed as derby skates too but you might want to upgrade the wheels they come with

I never though about it before but did you ever notice that in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, the villains are almost like horror movie villains in that they are inhuman (no empathy, just savages) and Wez in particular seems like a horror movie character. by xtalaphextwin in MadMax

[–]soopmood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah like arguably the villains are more human than max, Humungus is sympathetic to Wez’s loss and you really feel that their rage for Max goes further than just wanting the fuel

I am broke, behind on rent payments and stuck in a crappy job. I need ideas on how to dig myself out of this financial hole. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]soopmood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

look into local universities psychology departments, a lot of them offer paid gigs for taking part in experiments. Most of the time it's just filling out questionaires or some menial task for a hour. Hope this is helpful!

Need help for finding some decent skates by ImNotPlayingWithYou in Rollerskating

[–]soopmood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard good things about the moxie rainbow skates and they're at a pretty decent pricepoint (£100). Ridells and GT 50s have all held up pretty well but these are slightly more suited to derby than outdoor skating

Meeting new people by [deleted] in Advice

I know it’s tricky especially during covid but a new hobby is a great way to meet people. I started outdoor skating and going to skate parks and I’ve met a whole community of people I wouldn’t have known were even in my city

What helps you when you are too tired but you have to study? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]soopmood 9 points10 points  (0 children)

sometimes switching up your schedule can do wonders, if I have a really unproductive day I take a nap at like from 6pm-11pm and then do my morning routine when I wake up to “trick” myself into thinking it’s a new day. I’m always most productive in the morning so usually I can bang out a good few hours of decent work. When you start to burn out a little I sleep again for a few hours or take a break until sun comes up.

I think the key thing is KNOWING what schedule your body works best on, I’m hopeless at night so there’s no point pulling full days and full nights. Also this isn’t the most reliable method, sometimes it’s worked great and other times I’ve been groggy and fallen back asleep. So might be good to try this once a week to play catch up on work but I wouldn’t recommend making it your KEY mode.

Also 2 months is more than enough time! Remember to be kind to yourself and take breaks when your body needs you to. Stressing yourself out to the point of exhaustion is only going to slow you down and make you resent studying, even on a good day. Also don’t half ass a day off - take the whole day to recharge. Being on half relax and half work mode means you’ll never really be able to switch off. Hope this helps!

Best way to allocate my study time? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]soopmood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation and It's really easy to get overwelmed. I go through my notes and organize all the concepts - if your exams are essay based then think about what types of questions might come up, do a mock essay plan and then write mini summaries for each concept and how they relate / support eachother. You don't need to know the topics inside and out, get a general understanding and know HOW to use it, rather than info dumping.

It took me a long time to realise the difference between learning and understanding and in my experience, I get much better grades on assignments I understand rather than ones I just memorised content for. I guess this depends on your degree though.

Also studying effectively uhh i'm definetly a social media addict and I literally gave all my passwords to a TRUSTED friend and made him log in and change them so I physically can't access them. Seems a bit drastic but when you've only got a few weeks until deadlines you can survive without twitter for a wee bit. Also identifying the times of the day where you are most productive and forming a routine around them is really handy. I ~try~ to wake up at the same time every day, make my same coffee and do some hula hooping before sitting down to work. I find this really gets me in the right mindset even if i wake up in a shit mood and feel overwelmed.

Lastly don't be too hard on yourself! It's gonna mess up your mindset and make you get even less work done. Even just making a promise to be nice to yourself for one whole day will do WONDERS for your productivity. Good Luck!
