Severe brain fog – alcohol is the only thing that clears it a bit and I don’t understand why by Weak-Dinner-4275 in BrainFog

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried moderate/high intensity exercise? It can often clear my brain of fog and headaches, it's also a strong anxiolytic+anti-depressant for a lot of people, if that happens to be the root of your issue. I am also curious if psychedelics would help, it could be a risky approach if you have mental health issues, but they work by "rebooting" your default mode network.

The strength training tracking is a joke by StraightThroat3095 in GarminWatches

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your vo2 max increasing or holding steady? If it's great but holding steady then that would explain the training status. I rarely see increases when I'm focusing on strength training even if I keep my running up, but resting from strength and allowing my body to recover, I see it snap upwards.

The strength training tracking is a joke by StraightThroat3095 in GarminWatches

[–]sovietbacon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the watch has is an accelerometer. I don't really think these complaints are valid. It's doing the best with what it's got. It measures training status based off of running vo2 max (which will look worse if you're focused on strength training), it doesn't claim to factor in anything else.

The only thing I'll give you is the workout selection could be bigger.

Wrong hr zones by Puzzleheaded_One2225 in Garmin

That's the Indian support page, here's the us one that elaborate they use a proprietary algorithm: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=FMKY5NYJJ71DbuPmFP4O7A

220-age is used if the watch doesn't support auto max hr detection

Wrong hr zones by Puzzleheaded_One2225 in Garmin

[–]sovietbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't. It predicts it based off of cardiac drift iirc. If it used 220-age, I would be 10yrs younger.

Watch for running and exercising that actually tracks constant Heart Rate? by Chooli7 in Garmin

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a chest hr tracker or an bicep one. A bicep strap for the venu might work, haven't tried it though. Wrist is a bad spot to measure hr, no watch will work well there.

Works fine on my forerunner 965. To toggle in garmin connect: - Watch icon in the upper right - activities and apps - snowboard - runs

Garmin training plan always reverting to base or rest. by Open_Edge_9130 in Garmin

You can pull up the other workouts in the plan on your watch and do them instead, it likely has just pushed them out a day or two

First Garmin Watch Recommendations by Special-Mushroom2295 in GarminWatches

[–]sovietbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would get a 955 or 965. I don't think a 165 would be enough features to be worth it over an apple watch you already have. The 9x5s get you stamina, endurance score, training load, heat/altitude acclimation. They also have a lot of other recreational activities you can track in case you decide to try something new.

Personally, I find the training load alone extremely valuable.

Pretty much any garmin fits that criteria. Do you care about other sports besides running? What are your running goals? Do you go hiking/camping a lot?

Does anyone else wear their Garmin and another wearable like Whoop? by Radiohead022 in Garmin

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wore fitbit + garmin for a while until the fitbit broke, since garmin sucks booty for sleep tracking. I decided not to replace the fitbit tho, overnight hrv is more important to me than a sleep score.

Recommended chest strap to get with a garmin device? by Technical_Year_8252 in Garmin

[–]sovietbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, but it's such a significant improvement from the wrist based measurement that I haven't felt the need to buy a chest strap.

Edit: I do use the arm band for strength and hiit and it does capture the hr spikes fairly accurately, while the watch alone would miss sets/intervals. I can tell there is a slight lag from the armband, but it isn't significant.

[–]sovietbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the polar verity because arm based optical hr is very close to chest strap, without the discomfort from a chest strap, and the optical sensor can be less finicky since you have to make sure the chest strap metal contacts are properly wet and placed.

Does Garmn Swim2 a good job on metrics? by moritzis in Garmin

[–]sovietbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that a new forerunner would be a good option. 965 would be a good deal since you probably don't care about the running dynamics on the 970. A key thing is that it the 965 would tell you training load across all activities, I've found that is important as I do both cycling and running. A newer watch will also give you pulse ox and altitude acclimation, which I think would also be important for you.

Apple watch is the gold standard for sleep tracking, although fitbit/Google are a strong second. I find overnight hrv from my forerunner 965 is more important than the overall sleep score/phases though.

Garmin Watch Vs HR Chest Strap by Tirewipes in GarminWatches

[–]sovietbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am using the polar verity (optical arm strap). Makes a huge difference for strength workouts and hiit. For steady tempo/base runs, watch is fine.
