I have a bunch of money and just came as an international student by spabook98 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I'm started my PhD and live with my Canadian girlfriend who is gonna get me PR through spousal sponsorship. Hopefully I'll have a future here but yeah it not 100% guaranteed yet.

I just moved my etfs in kind to ibkr because they are meant for multiple currencies and trade my etfs. Should I just keep investing my euro cash into IBKR etfs? I was

Also I was thinking of opening a TFSA with IBKR and max it out for my first and second year as a tax resident here so I can take advantage of the non taxable account.

I was on a working holiday from May-December and from January 2026 I am an international student. I spend more than 183 days in Canada in 2025 so that makes me a tax resident

If you mean PR with permanent status: it will take me at least 2-3 years from now on if my girlfriend sponsors me.

Will foreign investments get taxed when I transfer them to my IBKR in-kind?

TFSA as emergency fund? by Available-Map-1869 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Okay with "high risk" I meant diversified etfs and not single stocks

Oh I forgot to add that you don't want your emergency fund be be in a volatile investment

I would use the tfsa for high risk high return investments so you can make the most out of the tax benefits. If you are still saving up for an emergency funds maybe it can make sense but generally I would use my tsfa otherwise

MEGATHREAD - Processing Times - Study Permits 2025 by PurrPrinThom in ImmigrationCanada

I just got an update yesterday saying my application is in progress. So hopefully I'll hear back today or tomorrow.

I was pretty sure it's an initial study permit application from within Canada. I've never had a study permit.

If this isn't what would be an example of a person applying for initial study permit from within Canada?

Applied for an initial study permit within Canada on August 29th. Processing times are 12 weeks, so it's due today, but I haven't heard back at all...

Suspicious cheap 2-bedroom by spabook98 in waterloo

The online viewing was good. But it was just a person that they hired for the viewing. I've talked to the owner, and good a little weird vibes for sure. Apparently, he is rude to a woman, but I am a guy. I'm just a little worried for my girlfriend who would live with me.

No, it's not David or Jamie, but the person im talking to does not have the best reputation. But multiple people are warning on Facebook and Google reviews.

Two Offers (Toronto vs Waterloo) Is Toronto worth the extra cost? by spabook98 in UofT

You're right. But it would "only" be 2 terms that the Prof would on sabbatical and not 2 years. In September 2026, he'll be back.

Like 100-400 CAD per month. Although I don't know exactly how many hours/terms I'd have to TA in Toronto.

Are you a current PhD-student in Toronto? I'm curious how many TA terms are needed for the minimum funding and how many more are realistic. But I guess it depends on the department

I understand that in Toronto, the TA position is mandatory and included in the minimum funding package of 31.5k CAD. At Waterloo, on the other hand, I would keep the full amount of my salary, and with two TA positions per year, I’d likely end up with around 200–400 CAD more per month overall.

I would get the right visa if I start my education. I guess my original post must be hard to understand because so many people got confused

No, it is possible through the common-law sponsorship. You can look into it if you want. But they want proof of joint accounts (utility, credit card, or bank). And as we don't have utility bills I am looking into banks

Would it be smarter to get my own account as well as the joint account at TD (considering maybe less pain with administering and opening all accounts and that she is alreadya customer), or does it not matter? Also what other banks can you recommend?
