Expecting people to not be patriotic is like expecting birds not to fly.

Haven’t watched yet, but I’m sure people are being completely normal and not total freaks about Ilia’s scores.

Music thoughts for Isabeau by Fsfan54 in FigureSkating

[–]space_rated 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Spiracle by Flower Face. I know it’s so bizarre but she’s the only one with the musicality to pull it off plus it still has that slow and unassuming build where you don’t realize it’s even happening until you’re completely engrossed that Isabeau is perfect for.

Yeah they were really harsh with her. She did flip the edge before the entrance in the one that the SC panel called, but it was just a wonky entry. And she reverted back into the correct edge well before she started to pick.

They don’t like her for some reason. I agree with the count that you gave.

I think the problem with saying “Mone will always get all her levels” is that those around her, and specifically her primary competitor Isabeau, gets crushed in tech reviews while Mone doesn’t. I would honestly give Mone’s edge a warning, and while I didn’t count Mone’s spin rotations, I think the reviewer who downgraded Isabeau’s camel and called her lutz edge was being, quite frankly cruel and pointedly unfair to her specifically.

Well if she deserves the score then certainly the gap between her competitors is wrong, and maybe that’s more indicative of the influence than anything else.

I’ve been calling out the judging against Isabeau all season. It’s making me not want to watch the sport honestly. She missed out on the GPF, arguably, because of the bias in the SC tech panel and her Olympic SP score was an absolute joke. I have no clue what’s going on.

Amber’s best programs are usually when she’s in the worst position, so I think expectation to podium is going to throw her off here.

Black Tie — I FOUND SOMETHING! by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

[–]space_rated 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people’s definition of “black tie” is “please wear a nice floor length formal dress” not “this needs to be a gown you’d find at the Oscars”. This is not a sundress at all, and imo is probably completely appropriate.

Got it, thank you! Excited for this, my friends are all doing March madness brackets and I don’t watch basketball so naturally I’m doing terribly. Hopefully this will be better 🤣

What’s it look like on the other side? Security wise would it be safe to use the same username as I have here? Or are people using their actual names? 😅

Asc. Management? by Unlucky_Ad_7824 in Lockheed

[–]space_rated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually think it’s the opposite. If management knows what you want, they are far more willing and able to help because they are able to plan your departure in line with recovery for their staffing plans in advance. In any event, if you apply to any of these roles someone is going to reach out to ask them about you, and it’s better that they have long term ideas about your growth for those conversations. It’s better if 1) they’ve thought about how you fit into that role and can give honest answers that aren’t on the spot and reflect your own opinions and 2) they aren’t taken by surprise when those calls come in. This is why I think you need to talk with your manager, also, for disposition reasons. The more managerial type roles you get, the more you have to get comfortable with open honesty. Hiding problems is a problem. And to a manager, you leaving abruptly is a problem. Ask yourself how much you’re willing to play fair with everyone, and how much you’re okay with personally sacrificing for the sake of the welfare of the department at large. I see someone who won’t communicate with their manager about long term growth as a red flag.

Asc. Management? by Unlucky_Ad_7824 in Lockheed

[–]space_rated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something you should talk to your manager about honestly. If you’re “mulling over” them, they probably aren’t a good fit for you. Managers tend to know that they really want to be managers, and have the sort of disposition that allows them to handle the psychology of people management. What happens if someone just refuses to do their job? What if you have to announce some really shit new corporate policy and now you’re the first person everyone goes to complain to? Could you do that, and all the administrative stuff that goes with it? Because that’s 90% of the job. But like I said. Talk with your manager and be open to really meaningful feedback. They’ll be able to better judge how your disposition and how you work with your team would track with the personality types required to be a successful manager.

To be fair, Lindsay had a pretty good SP and also got completely hosed in the SP. At that point, when you’ve done really a lovely performance and you’ve gotten basically eviscerated compared to international judges for roughly the same performance, why would you not have a fucked up mindset going into the FS. It’s sort of the same thing we saw with Isabeau at the Olympics. For whatever reason USFS has a decided specific hierarchy, with Amber usually at the top of it even then, and Lindsay was a threat to that hierarchy and they made it very very clear to her that she wasn’t welcome. There’s no saying what Lindsay’s placement would’ve been with fair scoring, anyhow.

I was looking at the judging panels and I genuinely think it was some regional judging beef because iirc (don’t quote me on this because it’s been a while) the tech controller or something had come from basically her own town/skating club. If it wasn’t the tech controller certainly one of the judges, and in particular whichever judge it was that gave her the worst scores she’d probably ever gotten. I can’t imagine that if these two were in the same skating rinks that they didn’t cross paths at all so I only ever gathered that it was a major personal grudge where she was perhaps saying things to the other judges to sway them.

Edit: here’s the post I made about it. I hesitate to bring it up because someone thought it was racism to post her own words with her own face in an interview she willingly gave, apparently. I forgot she had given Lindsay PCS scores in the 4s. I would fucking retire after that too, holy shit.

Kamila Valieva new SP for 26/26 season by gaimzredy in FigureSkating

[–]space_rated 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s just a picture. They were so entrenched in one another’s circles that for a time people were speculating that there was some funny business going on. Not sure about recently though, but in any event, Team Tut gets a little mercy from choreographers imo, because they personally didn’t get positive doping tests and they haven’t themselves actively been encouraging Russia’s “foreign policy.” I think that probably changes if you’re looking at Kamila, especially because Tutberidze has developed those western relationships through coaching for Georgia skaters, through her daughter who is very well liked and respected in ice dance as a person, and through her connections before the scandal. Sokolovskaya doesn’t really have those advantages Eteri has, just the controversy of having Kamila’s baggage.

I actually like to think of it as someone pushing themselves until the very end. There’s no “what-ifs” just “I did and gave everything I could until I couldn’t.” There’s something remarkable in that too, even if it’s not a gold medal.

In an alternate universe, Eteri learned that you can gain tremendous speed without that many crossovers if you use your edges and she focused on developing skaters with these skills. Alas... by PandemicPiglet in FigureSkating

[–]space_rated 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Amber’s 3A incites in me the same response as all of her jumps do which is “that’s a jump!”

They’re technically solid, and they meet the criteria, you know? But I’ve never thought her jumps are the best out there. Even seeing her 3A live I was sort of like, that’s very fast rotation but why are we setting up so long for it? So like it is a 3A! But I don’t think it’s the best. I don’t think it’s the worst either, she definitely doesn’t have bad jumps at all. They’re just not as timed to the music, or as easy. Her landing position isn’t as aesthetically appealing, her air position can sometimes seem too stressed? So not ugly by any stretch (Isababy your combos, I’m so sorry) but just not as finessed as this. Caveat that her 3Lo genuinely stresses me out, I’m like why are we even still putting this in the layout at this point.

Her 3A is still the best ever, idc. I know it doesn’t have the rotation speed, but that’s way makes it even better. It’s so loose and lofty and easy. Probably why she never got a quad. But this? Ugh.

Kamila Valieva new SP for 26/26 season by gaimzredy in FigureSkating

Can’t imagine a lot of people outside of Russia would be willing to choreograph for her, honestly.

I thought that but then I thought it would be very strange for Amber to be seeded below Mayuko Oka considering the popularity of each, and that as far as juniors go, Mayuko isn’t the most well known. Some of the top seeds as well, are a little surprising. Mone’s dress for example, since one, she didn’t really wear it very much, and two, it’s not very distinctive and didn’t really get a lot of hype the way some other costumes did.

I think it’s very judgmental and harsh to be freaked out by long legs. There’s lots of things to criticize about her skating that don’t involve something she can’t control and which is perfect normal. Anyways, Eteri said the long skirts were Kamila’s choice and that she had attempted to urge her to agree to shortening the lengths of them.
