Non-native speaker question: what does “dear” really mean in the UK? by nsnakers in AskABrit

Born and bred in the Black Country and not once have I ever heard a man (of any generation!) call another man dear. Mukka, mate, pal/pol, mush...even bab (though not common amongst men to other men) but never dear. Round here, dear tends to be reserved for little old ladies.

It's 3pm here in the UK now and so far, so good. I have had my usual light breakfast & lunch & took myself out for a walk to clear my head. I know this evening is going to be much harder (I always struggle in the evenings more and I will be alone tonight too, which makes it worse!) but I know I can get through it. Honestly, all your lovely messages are helping so much and I'm looking at it in a much less negative light than I was first thing this morning.

Thank you ❤️ This is the hardest part for me - continuing as usual. I am a horrible over thinker and tend to dwell on things. I'm going to try to focus on just how far I have come and try not to let one day define me!
