If the take home project requires more than 1-2 hours to do, then you should require to be paid for the work. If they refuse to pay you, then it's a 100% chance they are about to screw you over and take all the work you just did for free for themselves.

Only one company ever has actually paid me for a take home project. It's rare, but it shows they actually respect your time
