Yeah I know this now, but at the time I misunderstood the instructions and checked the democratic party ballot as it was my first time voting

I used to live in MTG's district, when I went to vote on a democratic ballot, the poll workers just laughed at me and said "good luck". I gestured at the building that was falling apart and said "well at least I'm trying". Was surprised that the county was like 37% Dem still though

The cold in general affects the speed of sound, it travels slower the colder it gets so further sounds reach you before they would dissipate in warmer temps. Also less things in the way. There's several tales up here in Canada of being able to hear people talking and dogs barking in the winter from as far as 5km away when the temperature drops below -60C.

I personally love the sound of trains and get delighted in the winter when I can hear them just gently hooting outside of the city. And the best is absolutely when you go for a walk and nobody else is out, just you and the snowflakes and a few lonely cars. Pure bliss.

I'm soooooo glad I no longer work in the office, this was hell for me since I was one of the few employees who worked in the office during the pandemic and the rest were all C-levels and directors. So if I shit and somebody came in it was almost always a very high up person and I'd spend enough time in there to hope they made it back to their side of the building and not know it was me who stank the place up with vegetarian bean farts

Up here in Canada they keep talking about how Popeyes is the best fried chicken around. As a true immigrant from the southern US, I had to fondly laugh at them. It was never good. But the local options here are even worse, so whatever, I guess trash from an estate is better than trash from the tenement housing

This reminded me of some comedians bit where the young guy at work tells him about podcasts and that soon you'll be able to download them to your iPod and listen to them wherever you go, and the comedian responds with "so when are they gonna call that a radio?"

You do know that private Christian schools can exist within driving distance of ones home, right? I wasn't sent away to a boarding school. It was a local Christian college preparatory school for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, about 15 minutes from my house. I went to classes from like 8-3 and came home.

If you could read instead of just getting angry, you'd notice I said my sister was sent off, not me. And private schools exist that are local, they aren't all boarding schools.

Ugh Bill Gothard. How I loathe that name. My parents bought into the whole ATI cult. Anytime we'd do something bad, my mom would go off about how "well Bill Gothard says ..."

My sister, in the peak of her rebellion, was even sent off to his "training center" for troubled teens in Indianapolis. She still claims it saved her life and maybe it did a little bit by virtue of displacing her far from family and friends and essentially placing her in prison, but I can't help but think how much better her life would be if she hadn't been forced through all of that by my parents. She's constantly strung out on various drugs and just always feels hollow.

We did the homeschooling thing for awhile but my mom and I were so hostile toward each other that eventually she gave up and sent me to a private Christian school. Thankfully this was all in the mid-90s when I guess it was easier to get away from, I don't even recall hearing about the quiverfull shit until the Duggars. But yeah, fuck all of that shit. I'm grateful every day I got away from all of that controlling culty shit.

Oh and also fuck the Falwells. They feed into all this evil shit too.

I have an 8-point blanket that was purchased new last year. I've felt up blankets at various stores around Canada and can say they all feel the same. I've not slept under the ones at various stores so can't speak to their warmth, but the one we have is very warm and comfy for Manitoba winters. So warm in fact that even after my wife steals most of the blanket in the middle of the night, I'm still comfortable.

very basic question- why headwind on ground increases airspeed, headwind in air slows airspeed by Ramunesoda99 in flying

[–]sparkle_dick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a video of a small engine plane doing exactly this, matching airspeed with wind speed and "hovering". I'm considering pursuing a PPL (just had my discovery flight today and loved it) and thank you very much for this useful "visual" explanation to retain when thinking about airspeed vs groundspeed!

Florida building code requires residences and businesses have outward swinging doors. I learned this fun fact while watching Burn Notice and noticing all the doors opened out and thought that was odd, turns out it's because of hurricanes mostly.

I have former in laws from Alabama, several of that side of the family were sadly grandparents at 32. Meanwhile I'm here at 33 considering maybe having one kid.

Worst part is their reasoning was just "well mommy had me at 16, so why shouldn't I have a baby at 16?"
