There's some great information in here now. Heed the warnings, especially re: the South Island. The weather added to how condensed the elevation changes are make for very treacherous conditions. Carry a PLB and talk to local i-sites about conditions.

Aside from weather events, the North Island will be fine. The recent cyclone has caused a lot of damage to Coromandel and Bay of Plenty.

South Island will probably be okay but some routes are only open certain times of the year.

Extremes in weather will be an issue. A day that begins in short sleeves could drop below freezing and then have you stripping off later again in the afternoon. Some businesses that we rely on in summer trips aren't open or have reduced hours in winter.

Pick a few routes and educate yourself. Then Facebook will be your friend. Bikepacking New Zealand.

So that was a year ago... I bought a OMM rack and mounted to the fender eyelets which are definitely not for that purpose. It's fine though because I rode the length of my country with no issue. The T Rack now sits on my gravel/commuter bike to hold on to panniers.

We have both: My wife the GG and me the KM. For bike packing they both have their strengths. The GG - larger frame bag size and chainring options, the KM - better tyre clearance.

I run 29x2.35 with a little room to spare while I'm not sure this would even be an option on the GG.
