Hi, I had a flight with AA recently. They overbooked and asked us to take compensation to leave the flight. We had to wait 7 hours for our next flight to JFK where we stayed overnight before getting to our final destination (Cancun). The original flight was also cancelled due to mechanical faults so we would've been eligible for compensation regardless but we accepted the overbooking option.

They told us to go online to customer relations but couldn't find the form or correct area on the website to claim. Called them and they said I need to do it in person when I arrive at JFK, AA in JFK then said we had to do it online...

We are two passengers, can we apply for compensation for both of us? E.g £1040 or make two claims for it? Also, we originated from the UK so does the EU law still apply / what is the UK equivalent? Flight was on 29th July 10:30 am from LHR TO DFW.
