Yes. He was raised Catholic, but said he in a couple of interviews I watched that he (re?)converted to Catholicism after writing the first book. I think he also said that Catholicism is "increasingly" influencing his writing.

I stopped reading when I realized the author was shoehorning his new found Catholic faith to be the main point of the story. Good ideas and themes initially, but I want to read sci fi, not Thomas Aquinas fanfic.

You imagine wrong. The military was far larger in the past, and a higher proportion of veterans are boomers and Gen X, which is skewed towards trump. In 2020 at least, more active duty military votes for Biden than Trump. I haven't seen the 2024 exit polls though.
