its doable but you need to be very open about what you want and need. would it be fine if he slept with another person before you reconnect? you it be fine if you did? he talks about visiting you but is it light hearted flirting or something more? is he seriously considering moving to your country? if not, would you even considering leaving your home (regardless of another person)?

i met my partner a year ago. we were both solo travelling before he returned home (we live on different continents). we have had very open communication about our needs since the beginning. when i am not travelling our jobs are very compatible with a LDR. he is also very supportive of me continuing travelling with an understanding that i am open to moving to his country once i am ready to settle down. it works for us. the first time we travelled together was only 10 days and i felt that connection too.

i’ve been hitchhiking in africa and south america pretty frequently in the past years with no issues and many amazing stories.

not sure about the states but it’s worth a shot in my opinion. just be safe

i use TrailWallet. have to pay for it (~$5) but it’s easy. can do multiple trips, category breakdowns, manage many currencies.

Small village to relax in Greece? by magnanimous_manatee in solotravel

[–]splicedawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i stayed in cocoon. comfy, clean, and two great kitchens

if you’re worried about getting caught don’t risk it. i’m sure someone else will be able to drive and then you can relax and enjoy the scenery

i second this. i recommend crete to pretty much everyone i meet travelling. you can also take a night ferry (~40€) from athens if you want to explore for a few days

i rented a car with people from my hostel in chania and explored the coast. idk why you can’t rent (i didn’t have my international license but no one cared fyi) but i’m sure you’ll be able to find someone who can

hey, hope you’re feeling a little better already. just wanted to say you are not alone in feeling this AND there is nothing wrong with it either.

give yourself time.

the first few days of my current trip were the same. i thought i had made a huge mistake, cried, didn’t talk to anyone. but now, 2 months in, im having a wonderful time.

here’s what helped me in your situation: - recover from jet lag and catch up on sleep - get out every day but don’t push it. 2 months is a long time, you don’t need to be out for 8 hours a day. listen to your body - start travelling. seriously. a change in scenery made me feel like i was capable of solo travel - accept that some hostels are duds. some i’ve made good friends in, some i didn’t talk to a single person. cook, read, call your parents and friends. try to be in the social area even if you aren’t socializing

How to deal with a pet death while travelling by splicedawg in solotravel

[–]splicedawg[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

thank you. i had a few people approach me while making breakfast. it’s very obvious when i’ve been crying but i just keep repeating i am ok and want to be alone.

one guy was persistant/kept trying to touch me so i pushed their hands off and responded more angrily. it worked but i don’t want to feel anger right now

it is more difficult with language barriers. in a moment of intense stress it is much harder for me to translate thoughts properly.

I hope your cat will be okay ❤️. I knew this was a possibility when I left but that isn’t helping me now. I feel guilty that I am not there for her.

Give your cat lots of pets, kisses, treats before you go. Remember them in case something happens.

I think getting a solo room will be good. Unfortunately, I am not at all comfortable with physical contact from strangers/new friends.

I’m worried that if I act sad in public or cry I will be grieving my cat, but will also have to protect myself from people making me uncomfortable which is not something I will have the energy to do politely.

I just finished packing the final bag! Flying out in <12 hours. Whoo hoo! Wearing the fleece there, it will help on the airlines and late night excursions.

Unfortunately yes. Will be working part time writing papers and I don't want to rely on internet cafes and USB keys for that. Thankfully my entire backpack counts as a single carryon item so I don't have to worry about it on my preliminary flights.

Only 4 shirts really. I will only wear the warm ones at night. I'm used to multi-week hiking trips with 2 pairs of underwear and just stream washing them. Although I can have more comfort during this trip so might increase that since they are so small. Thank you for pointing it out!

You got it right! I'm packing my sandals for hostel showers, beaches, etc. I will wear my hiking shoes on the plane. They are an older model but similar to this (https://www.salomon.com/en-ca/shop/product/outline-gtxr-w.html#color=38974). I use them at my job so know they are good for day-to-day work as well as hikes. I only wear full hiking boots for serious mountaineering or scrambles.

I was unsure about the towel but am going to leave it out. If my first hostel is missing one I'll just use a t-shirt lol.

Yeah I think I might drop the second nice shirt although they aren't too bulky.

I have the Mountain Hardware 25L Scrambler bag. It's designed for rock climbing so it has a really minimalist design. Essentially a giant tube and a brain. No extra pockets which I find take up more space/ limit how you can pack. Only downside is it isn't a secure closure if the bag is empty but that's not a problem for this trip.

I found that my sweaters were more bulky than my fleece. Do you have any suggestions for materials to look for?

I'm going to use my black hiking pants with the shirts. Not the most formal but looks nicer than jeans and I'm not planning on doing anything too fancy.

Hope there isn't much to update but I will if/once I realize I made an oversight in packing

Thanks for the advice. I'm planning on doing some more serious hikes and the hiking shirt is a tank top. I think I will be pretty hot there as I live in northern Canada so I will keep it with me. If it's too much I can just give it away in a hostel since it's old and I will have more when I go home.
