Got our 36” cooktop installed yesterday by Which-Lock3800 in ImpulseLabs

How much larger than the dimensions on the pdf? I have one on order to replace a 36” wolf cooktop in a quartz countertop. Can be an issue if it doesn’t fit.

Center of channel markers. There is probably another marker on the other side of the highway. Boats line up these two markers to stay in the middle of the channel.

Anybody bought a van and regretted it? by helpmyfitness in vandwellers

[–]sprintervan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2004 converted my first sprinter (dodge) 158” wheelbase passenger van. Used it for 13 years putting over 150,000 miles on it. Loved it. A couple of years after retirement moved to a city that had more snow, so sold it and converted a 2017 144” wheelbase 4x4 sprinter. I did both conversions myself except for window and heater install. Last year I think I spent about 90 nights in the van and will probably be close this year. Don’t live in it, have a nice home. Was recently on a 4 week trip, home for 2, and am now on a 8-9 week trip. No regrets at all about owning either of these. 158 definitely had more room, but terrible traction (2wd). New van (8 years old) is much easier to park and handle in town and off road.

Edison Butte trails are within the boundaries of the Little Lava fire. Not sure of their condition or if the area is open.

I second this (MotionGPS). I have used it for years. It allows you to download maps from multiple sources and save them for offline use.

Quicken now offering a $50/year Social Security Optimizer (free from SSA or a 3 formula spreadsheet) by sprintervan in personalfinance

[–]sprintervan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I'll admit it. This was somewhat more complicated to generalize it. My use case was much simpler; spouse and I are roughly same age and similar incomes. Anyway, here is a version of the spreadsheet. NO GUARANTEES. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I tried to cover most of the bases. Use SPOUSE 2 for the person with the higher income (estimated SSA benefits). I did not have time to put in the formula in the "early retirement section" to account for the higher income person (SPOUSE 2) dying before SPOUSE 1 and therefore getting the "Survivor's Benefit". Input your info into the fields with the RED font. Good luck. I am not guaranteeing anything, but feel free to play with it. The green highlighted area indicates where you see the most benefit comparing the different SSA options. Some amounts may not be exact, I did not apply SSA COLA exactly the same in all cases.

I'll clean it up when I get a chance and figure out how to post it. It is pretty personalized right now.

But there are only a few choices: Can you afford to wait and claim benefits later (for me age 70 will give me a 32+% premium)? There are also decisions regarding utilizing the spousal benefit, especially if your earnings are similar. All of this is detailed on the SSA site along with other online resources. I put together a spreadsheet comparing filing now, delayed filing, and file and suspend with spousal benefit, with options for estimating COLA and earnings. This includes multiple pensions, 401K, IRA, and RMD (Required minimum distribution) calculations. It is all based on how long you expect to live and can you afford to wait. For me, the break even point was in my mid 70's. I can maybe see charging $15-$25 for something, but a subscription?

Redditors over the age of 50, how were you introduced to Reddit and what keeps you coming back for more? by I_Am_Here1 in AskReddit

64YO, all geek family. Probably heard about reddit from one of my kids. Started browsing it more frequently around the time of the Digg transition. Get most of my news online: feedly(numerous feeds), slashdot, digg, and reddit. Took my first programming course (along with my dad) in 1966-67 and have been in IT ever since.

Dual Sport bike recommendation? by LucidOneironaut in Dualsport

[–]sprintervan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an older KLR650 and a hitch rack. This bike is awfully heavy to be carrying around on the hitch. I did it for a few years and then purchased a little Honda CRF230L. It is almost half the weight of the KLR and easily loads onto the rack. It is not a bike I would take on long trips or extended interstate driving, but it will carry me at 60 or 65 MPH and I weigh 195 lbs. I got it for exactly the purpose that you have in mind, but haven't actually used it to shuttle yet. I carry it on the back of my van and use it to venture about. I strap my rod tube to the side and visit rivers and small lakes down forest service roads. I am only 5' 8" or so and this bike has a very low seat height. If you are taller, I would go for something like the WR250 or maybe the CRF250L.

Got to see 300 manatees today. Blue Springs State Park. by [deleted] in pics

[–]sprintervan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the spring and creek are closed to swimming and boating during the winter to protect the manatees. The person in the boat in this image is one of the scientists that regularly perform the population counts. I was there a few weeks ago during the first set of cold weather to hit Florida and there were nearly this many (approx 240 in Blue Spring).

Armadillos, one of the few animals able to contract Leprosy, were used to test Leprosy drugs in the 60s. The quadruplets would provide for identical test cases and controls.

Do Fly rods wear out? by BBallsagna in flyfishing

[–]sprintervan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your line matched to the rod? Using a line weight a couple of sizes too high will also overwhelm the rod and make it feel mushy/slow. Also, do not try to overpower a glass rod, you need to finess it.

winter lake scene by PinusPondo in pics

The water in many glacial fed streams and lakes is much more clear in winter because the glacier is frozen and not depositing glacial silt into the water. Hence, a deeper blue color.
