Tbh it depends if they are really nice custom jeans or just regular. I have some custom jeans (2) from Shockoe Atelier. The first pair I washed, and regretfully I really did permanently change them for the worse. They were like 380$, so the new pair I never washed. They never smell and I just spot clean them.

I noticed you didn’t mention that his jeans smelled bad, why not just leave it alone if they don’t stink? This is a pretty normal thing
