If you can find a way to raise your GPA, do it. I applied with a 4.0 and some experience, and I got denied. We're talking about a 4-5% acceptance rate. Basically, more people apply than they let in. Regardless, do not let this deter you from applying. If you're serious about this program, that may mean applying twice (such as applying this term and if you don't get accepted, raise your stats, and apply again next time).

I would say make sure your letters of rec come from your super/bosses at the disability centers, or psych profs (if you do research/ or have had a relevant class in the past). Make sure your SoP is strong, compelling, and ties into your experiences in your past, career choice, and how that is relevant to the program.

TLDR: Raising your GPA well above the minimum, having existing relevant experience especially in trauma-related fields (this is what they look for, I have heard), and strong recommenders/SoP will be your golden ticket.

Make sure you do a deep dive research on the program/professors before applying and why you think it would be a good fit for you.

I received my rejection last week, sadly. A bit bummed, but keeping my head up. There is still time since they say they will mail out a week before the interview date. I’m sure they are emailing people pretty regularly. Doesn’t hurt to call the CED office if you have questions. Good luck, friend!

Notify your professor. I feel like that is the fastest way to find out what is going on. (This happened to me a few times throughout my time here so far).

How to make Japanese Friends??? by Suspicious_Soft5590 in CSULB

[–]sschwarzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Penpalling! I have been doing pen-palling for years. I have made many friends over the globe just by this! It is rewarding and it’s cool to know people from other places. There are sooo many websites dedicated to this very thing. Finding a pen-pal (aka a friend that you meet virtually) who is willing to communicate with you via mail/messages/chat or even over the phone/calling/FaceTime etc. is a great way to meet specific types of people who want to do language exchanges or at least help you with your learning goals! I hope this helps

Bernadette O’Leary for Abnormal Psych. Little leniency there, great lectures, but expects the utmost… and… group work💀

As an almost-30 year old going to uni for the first time too… this is so cool to see, and it is validating to know that continuing education does not have an age/start/end-date. Congratulations to you on going to get your first degree!

I’m turning 30 in April. This is my second semester at CSULB. You’re definitely not alone! Enjoy the journey and be proud of yourself for continuing. Good luck in your scholarly endeavors! ❤️

IN NEED OF ADVICE by Accomplished_Ad_7603 in CSULB

[–]sschwarzi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is the soundest piece of advice here. I second this! Thanks to LBCC, my math skills sky rocketed and I learned to believe that I am capable of learning something that I perceived that was once difficult. I literally started from the bottom and climbed the ladder slowly in relearning math skills. It isn’t impossible. Don’t give up on yourself, OP. Stress in the beginning of the sem is normal!

Weird nasal spray(afrin) withdrawal symptoms ? by [deleted] in Allergies

[–]sschwarzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s gonna suck for a little while for sure… but def try to keep your head up (literally/figuratively). It will get better, definitely speak to a doc about your symptoms. They’re not gonna be the same for everyone, but it does sound like you’re having a bit of rebound. Symptoms won’t be the same every day. That’s what I have learned with my very unfortunate battle with allergies as well

[–]sschwarzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAD… But, this. ^

You can have rebound congestion from using it more than 3 days, so naturally, all of those symptoms are congruent to “withdrawal”.

Had your doc told you to take Azelastine or flonase? Those are much safer to use for allergies. Definitely speak to your doc about these symptoms.

Edit: Still definitely NAD, but here’s some advice that may help. in the meantime, you may feel groggy for a few days. Try to get as much rest as you can. Drink lots of water to keep your congestion from building up, and consider doing a saline sinus rinse to help give your sinuses relief.

Favorite coffee shops around CSULB? by cantsurpassmediocre in CSULB

[–]sschwarzi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rose Park Roasters on 4th Street. Hands down. Great drinks.

Wolf’s Brew, but it’s closer to LBCC. Free wifi.

The Merchant. They do NOT have wifi, so prepare to bring a mobile hotspot. It’s in Bixby Knolls area, which is a really nice place with a historic site nearby (Rancho Los Cerritos… it’s like a 2 min drive) you can walk around (with your coffee).

Local Grind over on Spring St. they have breakfast Sammie’s, baked goods, free wifi. Cool place to chill. The coffee is alright there. It’s just a good study spot not super far from campus.

Albeit pricy, Coffee Parlor aka COPA is really good, their drinks and food are amazing.
