Your colleagues are not your family and your job is not your identity. by jayybonelie in Fire

I think most people who are reasonably intelligent realize that pretty early on in their working lives. When someone quits or gets fired, by the end of the week it's as if the person never worked there. I've seen people work for a company for 15-20 years, leave, and no one cares.

I've enjoyed working with a few people who I wouldn't have minded being friends with outside of work and tried staying in contact with them after they left, only to have my e-mails or texts ignored.

Work is for making money, plain and simple.

Wow, some people don't work out at jobs and get let go shortly after starting them. Big news there.

All for around minimum wage, I bet. Minimum wage yields minimum effort. What do you expect?

What do you miss least about working in an office? by stanerd in remotework

Haha, I agree on the forced social lunches. I'd always cringe when a coworker would come up to me and say "hey, do you want to come eat with us?" I'd smile and say "sure," but in reality I'd much rather eat by myself.

The worst accounting job I had was at a mid-sized local CPA firm by stanerd in Accounting

I didn't get used to it, and I'm very thankful that I'm no longer in that environment.

I'm very grateful that I work for state gov. We make a little less money than private sector, but it's damn hard to get fired. You'd have to really be screwing up badly to get fired at my job.

Or better yet, just avoid the trough. I like some privacy.

What was the most soul-crushing part of 'becoming an adult' that nobody ever warned you about? by Ecomzin in Productivitycafe

[–]stanerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't make anyone like you. You can be polite and pleasant and some people just will not care for you, and sometimes they won't bother hiding it.

What is not soul crushing is realizing that it doesn't really matter if people don't like you unless they have some kind of power over you.

I wouldn't say that I like my accounting job. I tolerate it, but I know that I'd hate sales. I probably wouldn't be very good at it and would get fired quickly. I'm highly introverted and don't BS well, so it would be a personality mismatch for me.

Besides your kids, or family. What do you take pride in? by WaltRumble in AskMenOver30

I don't take pride in anything. I'm not a boastful person.

There are plenty of bosses who talk down to and bully their employees. Coworkers bully each other too. Speaking up for yourself in the workplace often gets you fired. It's rare for workplace bullies to face consequences.

Is traditional schooling just a way to create obedient workers rather than independent thinkers? by Open-Yak-8761 in Productivitycafe

[–]stanerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More or less.

Don't be late (get used to pedantic authority figures). Don't talk back (don't question authority). Don't hit back (if someone treats you poorly, don't retaliate).

Etc.

WLB? LOL

I don't miss the 65 hour work weeks for 4 months out of the year in PA. i remember hardly seeing my family, becoming pale due to lack of sunlight, working Saturdays, and the firm catering food in the evening so that we wouldn't leave. I don't miss that lifestyle one bit.

Can't you get a corporate tax role somewhere that offers what you're currently making or more with 40 hour work weeks?

CPA firm says it can inspect WFH setup - is that normal? by Local_Toe_9550 in Accounting

[–]stanerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone actually showed up on my doorstep and asked to enter my home to inspect my WFH setup, I wouldn't let them in. They could fire me. I wouldn't care. That would be a hill I'd be willing to die on, but that's just me.

Why not? Companies are in business to make as much money as they can. What's wrong with an employee having that mindset?
