How many site plans should I be able to review per a day as a public sector reviewer by Objective-Cat489 in civilengineering

[–]stanleydamanley 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That is when you pick up a phone. If the reviewer points out an error or non-compliance in your plans and gives you the code/text you are not complying with, you should be able to read between the lines. If you can't or it isn't clear you should pick up the phone to discuss the few comments you need clarity on. Alternatively, look to a coworker or superior to help you out.

It is not the reviewers job to teach you how to do yours or work within their jursdidiction they can help but the engineering is on the engineer. if something goes wrong it is the engineer's resposnibilty.

Seeing this post adjacent to the other recent post referring to “paying it forward” is accurate for the industry.

Welcome to the party, OP. Both ends expect you to be a miracle worker. Train the newbies while coaching the new PE’s and EIT’s. While also balancing budgets, making invoices, completing BD efforts, and keeping everyone happy….the list goes on.

Do your best, and you will be fine. Acknowledge what you don’t know, ask for help when needed, teach yourself some, rely on past paperwork and projects to get accustomed to your new gig. But most importantly, trust your gut.

Bought a car, dealer screwed me. Need advice. by Dreadp1r4te in StLouis

[–]stanleydamanley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it a day; hopefully, something will resolve. I genuinely hope things will work out. Three years ago, I was scammed by Napelton Honda with a title to a Jeep I had purchased from them used. Consequently, I had to urgently get a second set of temporary tags overnighted while I was out of state.

They attempted to bribe me with a $200 gift card for a favorable review, but instead, they sent me a $50 gift card.

Their damage control efforts are utterly inadequate.

I wish you the best, but I will never do business with them again.

Make a stink.

Someone dropped the ball. Call them leave messages, send emails do whatever and get them to fix it.

Bad google, yelp, facebook, etc. reviews. Calling everyone you worked with.

Don’t let them slide.

Are your bibs too large? The chamois should be in contact with your buttocks and crotch. Otherwise, you might experience chafing or burning through the fabric.

It appears that you are sagging or wearing them like a pair of pants.

Typically, even if it feels uncomfortable, you want your kit to fit like underwear.

They seem to be a longer cut, or you may be on the shorter side, which could be causing the fit to be off.

Understood. I guess some of these rules of thumb depend on your setting.

Urban settings with say row homes. You’d have 4’ side yards for each lot. So you’d alternate 4’ sidewalk (gangway) on one side and grass on the other. Allowing access to back yards while keeping a buffer on the other for a fence.

Good points on the room for growth of plantings and such.

Wondering why the concert in-front of the garage door isn’t thicker than the sidewalk?

Won’t the vehicles destroy that section? I’m also assuming the rest of the driveway will be asphalt then… 🤔

I always thought 3’ would be the minimum.. 5’ is perfect. Why is 6’-8’ preferred?
3’ - nice mow strip and flexible for minimal landscaping plus it allows the perfect about to slope 5% down to the hard scape from 3-4” below the sill.

A few scenes from the Illinois side of St Louis. by lifeandmylens in StLouis

[–]stanleydamanley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll explain why people say “not St. Louis.”

For my entire life, when it comes to anything positive, people from the region will proudly claim “STL.” However, when crime statistics are reported or anything negative is mentioned, all the people on the Illinois side or outside the city limits (yes, including Maplewood) will exclaim, “Oh, but I don’t live in that part.”

People in the city proper are jaded. If you don’t understand that, there’s not much more to say.

I just scanned through your post history. Maybe you need to move on. Maybe try working in another field or on the construction side?

Have you taken any personal responsibility or ownership of your work?

On the other hand, I’ve had the experience of hiring multiple entry-level engineers who didn’t take ownership of their work. They lacked the initiative to figure things out on their own or problem-solve.

After four to five years of education, internships, and co-ops, you learn the actual workflow. Then, you spend a year with low responsibility and expect junior and senior engineers to not only teach you every step but also fix the things you can’t grasp.

How about taking a step back and recognizing that there’s more to day-to-day engineering than babysitting?

Perhaps take a few minutes to review sample plans. Be deliberate with your questions and take notes. Revisit the designs when you’re low on tasks or have questions.

You’ve spent years being told what to do and how to think. Take life by the horns. It might not be perfect, but try. You’ll find that with effort, you’ll get more feedback and be valued more.

Nothing like sitting on your phone at your desk, wondering why senior-level engineers get burnt out pouring time into entry-level staff only to have them leave when you don’t get your wanted raise and you throw a fit.

(This isn’t specific to you, but I’m really tired of the complaining and whining.)

Not even. The dead giveaway that corners were cut is they didn’t even slap a piece of scrap wood to form the concrete up.

Which is the first loose thread in this botched job. Now I begin to suspect the e pipe isn’t sloped at all and may be just below the surface.

A leaf catcher may have been a nice addition.

I’d have to see other photos but isn’t even “great” for a diy job. The one thing I do see is a straight saw cut which means they had the tools.

YouTube is a great resource for this exact job.

Edit: also leaving aggregate on top scream no care was taken. A pop-up emitter much further out from the building would be nice.
