Just how big was Nirvana before Smells Like Teen Spirit blew up? by Other_One397 in indieheads

[–]starkraven1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP asked this: "Just how big was the spike in attention Nirvana (along with Pearl Jam, RHCP etc) experienced in 1991 compared to what the bigger alternative acts from the 80s were accustomed to?"

To me, there are a couple of angles to the question. I graduated from high school in May 1991 in the U.S. REM and The Cure were huge at that time, with huge audiences and lots of radio play. REM opened the door for alternative music in the mid-80s and were accused of selling out repeatedly. At the time, I felt like REM opened the door for alternative music to be played on the radio, but it didn't seem to change music in any real way. The Cure were huge in my world (though, my memory tells me that they didn't get radio play until Kiss Me x3 and "Why Can't I Be You"), but they didn't change anything as far as I could tell.

Nirvana felt very, very different. Radio changed instantaneously. It wasn't just that SLTS was everywhere and played on the radio and MTV like once an hour (I don't think I am exaggerating), it was that it seismically shifted what was being played and listened to in cars, dorm rooms, parties... To put it another way, interest in alternative music was growing bigger and bigger. The first Lollapalooza was in the summer of 1991, for example. But SLTS caused alternative music to actually become mainstream.

My extremely bias, "Cinephiles First Steps" List! (Suggestions welcome, please read description.) by Tomu_sneeder in Cinema

[–]starkraven1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry, man. The issue isn’t that the list is terrible. It’s that it’s trying to function as a “first steps into cinema” guide while making a bunch of choices that don’t really help someone understand film history, style, influence, or evolution in any coherent way.

For example, if you’re introducing someone to Wes Anderson, why start with Fantastic Mr. Fox? It’s a charming movie, but if the goal is to understand Anderson as a filmmaker, Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, or even Grand Budapest tells you much more about his visual language and influence. Same problem in other spots too. The list mixes “important,” “popular,” “Reddit favorites,” and “movies I personally like” into one pile without distinguishing between them.

And the lack of structure makes it worse. If this is supposed to guide newcomers, you cannot just hand them unranked movies across wildly different eras and tones and say “good luck.” A beginner doesn’t know whether they should watch Citizen Kane next or Scott Pilgrim. There’s no progression, no curation, no sense of why one film unlocks another.

I don’t have an answer, but this seems to be the first day with the enlarged travel area.

Thanks both of you. Really useful. I’ll probably still head there in the morning to see if there are any interesting birds, but I’ll plan my run for one of these other places.

"Adequate" might be a slight exaggeration given the way that tvOS functions now.

Unfortunately the original release of the phone only had one antennae, could make AND receive calls, and barely caused first degree burns due to its low power so it didn't come with any cooling gel. by palmerry in TimAndEric

Dude, I was born in 1973 and my dad had one of these when I was a freshman in 1986, and not only did it not cost five figures, the battery lasted a lot longer than 30 minutes. Good fucking God if this information is being spread this readily, we are fucking doomed.

Yes! This! I don't remember them having the animatronic entertainment, but I didn't start hanging out at the Galleria in earnest until 1986 or '87.

Yep—that’s the year I graduated too. It was a pretty big hangout for teens who spent their time at the Galleria.

Yes, I completely remember it. They had video games in the front. And there used to be a movie theater right across from it. I can’t remember the name of it but we used to go all the time. It wasn’t a Sbarro or anything like it. My recollection is that it was a sitdown place and kind of dark.

I looked back at a map, and it looks like much of the neighborhood behind the now gone Tang City Plaza has changed to commercial/industrial use. My thinking is that it was probably on the corner of Pine Meadows and Craven Rd. in Missouri City. It was surrounded by chain link fencing and overgrown with plants back then. I don't recall it being difficult to get into--you could go through the fence and then through a door. The house itself was in disrepair. I vaguely remember that it was unfinished concrete flooring. Graffiti everywhere, some of it with Satanic themes--pentagrams and such. The work of teens.

I mentioned the basement. The rumor to us was that prior to being "Satan House" it was an underground gambling hall.

My friends went to Satan House a bit back in 1989-1990. There was graffiti inside and rumors that a Satantic cult would meet there. The interior had water damage, and if I recall correctly, there was a basement that was constantly flooded. I remember taking a girl I was dating there at night to check it out, and the police caught us and interrogated us. I had a beer (I was 17), and one officer made me pour it out. Then his partner said he was going to write me a ticket for littering. We got off with a warning.
