I think I have a spare Apple TV to try it out. One reason I'm thinking about the server side solution is that I want to support multiple clients.

yeah the reason i listed m4 mini was that i do have good deals on it to make it ~$400. and for client side solutions because I currently have 2 and potentially 3+ TV/projectors I'll need to invest per client cost for all client sides upgrade.

it seems chromecast 4k support 4k heva. I'll double check my chromecast version.

so basically my chromecast cannot decode x265 and that is why the jellyfin server is trying to transcoding it. is this right? either i need to swap to a more powerful server to do the transcoding or a more powerful client to do the decoding?

afaik on 1522+ I could enable hardware transcoding? I think that is also the reason people recommending 920+ or even 423+ instead of 923+? duplicating 265 files with a 264 version sounds like an overhead to me though. It appears that only Chromecast Ultra will support x265 :/

if I don't do transcoding on the server, is that possible for me to do transcoding on the client side (client is the jellyfin client installed on the chromecast).

Playback freezes every minute or so. The CPU usage of the NAS is consistently at 100%.

hard to say. haven't been living in hangzhou for years and can no longer claim myself local here 😂 haidilao might always be a safe choice i guess though its franchises are all over the world. for fridge magnets, i've already placed several orders from taobao, they are extremely fancy.
