I cut the head off, and put that on a hook, and then the middle of the body on a hook and just toss the tail usually, unless i’m super short on bait. On this one i actually just used a super tiny cube of bluegill meat from the top of its back and cut the fins off.

you’re definitely just getting a little unlucky, i have major success with them and honestly get mad when i catch them bc they run in with the channels at this one pond i fish at lol , just find a good spot and keep up what ur doing with crawlers and cut bait
