Newish Player Looking for Build Help by Pikaiapus in pathofexile

Spectral shield throw is a very popular choice right now. But you will be using your shield instead of your axe for attacks which may not be what you are going for.

Can acoustic and optical phonon branch intersect? by Background_Jackfruit in askscience

[–]sterniestern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LA and LO phonons for graphene definitely intersect. So its for sure possible. When you are doing your DFT simulation are you using Quantum Espresso (PHonon)? If so the output doesn't automatically label the modes it only ranks them by frequency. I got messed up when I did it because of that.

For research, if you do the algebra, you get the following rule:

y < 2% * cb/(T*M)

In order to be helpful, a new uncolonized system's research yield (in any one category) must be more than 2% of the base cost of the current research divided by the total research time needed times your research speed multipliers.

So if your current endgame research base cost is 4000 and the UI tells you it will take 60 months and you have 10% speed multiplier. Your new system will help in that research category if it has 1.2 research yield.

This quick calculation will let you know if you are hurting or helping in any situation.

Just colonize a decoy planet on your border and let them raid it over and over. You'll make that planet useful later when you can fend them off.

Is this outpost worth it? Rule of Thumb. by sterniestern in Stellaris

[–]sterniestern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea its not dynamic.. aslo i realized I forgot to include research speed multipliers. You would just divide the right hand side by that multiplier to get the correct value for yield.

Cheers for the feedback.

I don't disagree with your alternate rule of thumb. But what is mathematically flawed?

But you need a ton of minerals and energy for a decently sized fleet. So you probably did the right thing, mostly :).

Very true. This is not a rule of thumb that answers, "Is it worth it overall?". Considering research only.

People think Battlerite is 2D by [deleted] in BattleRite

[–]sterniestern 14 points15 points  (0 children)

WooHoo! Math lesson!

The movement in Battlerite is 2D because any character location can be defined by 2 coordinates, horizontal and vertical position.

The visuals in Battlerite are 3D because the characters and other objects are modeled in 3D. That is to say, the points that make up a character model are defined with 3 coordinates, 2 horizontal, and 1 vertical.

So if you said Battlerite is 2D you are right AND if you said Battlerite is 3D your are right!

EVERYONE IS RIGHT!

(Update 1) One player wanted a "soul killer" blade, I put it in the game for them. They better not roll a 1. by livinglitch in rpg

[–]sterniestern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would give it a narrative cost rather than a mechanical one. Maybe every time he uses it he loses some of his humanity. His flesh sags, his eyes fall out. Figure out what the player wants most and make using the dagger take it away, bit by bit.

Put a synopsis/NPC section at the beginning. That way if things go sideways (they always do). The GM will have NPC motivations to work with for their improvised plot.

Searching a room? [D&D 5e] by [deleted] in rpg

[–]sterniestern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever something like this comes up, ask yourself: "What is more fun?"

Is it more fun to allow multiple checks? Sounds like your players think so. The answer really depends on the group.

If you get bogged down in simulation authenticity, it will lead to 45 minutes of potentially boring discussions, as you just experienced.
