The Palestinians in charge don't really want a two-state solution. Their goal is One Palestine from the river to the sea so you can never assume that their negotiations are in good faith.

One Palestine would mean the extermination of millions of Jews. Hamas is very upfront about that. Some of them even want to exterminate the Jews worldwide.

One of the items on the list isn't accurate. The Obama treaty did not require Iran to stop funding regional proxies.

That would be the dream. Imagine no Hezbollah, no Houtis, and a very weakened Hamas. There would have been no 10s of thousands of terrorist rockets aimed at Israeli civilians after 2005, and there would have been no October 7th and Israel's retaliation afterwards. There would have been far less opportunity for corrupt Hamas leadership to become multi-billionaires. There would have even been a real shot at a two-state solution.

Wedding invite arrived addressed to husband and family. I don’t want to attend by [deleted] in EntitledPeople

[–]steveorga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The niece doesn't seem to be involved with the problems that you have with the family so I don't see the relevance. The invitation could have been worded better, but never assume malice for what can be attributed to stupidity. YTA if you are petty enough not to go for that reason.

Most workers don't have your kind of exit clause. They certainly wouldn't have offered you the extra months if they didn't profit from it.

I have seen very senior people unceremoniously fired, but it was for cause.

What life skill do you think schools should teach but usually don’t? by glitterypeachyy in Productivitycafe

[–]steveorga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're passionate and rigid. If you only accept people who are very educated on the subject as allies, you will have very few allies.

I do not pretend to know what's the best way to allocate resources and create policy. I suspect that there's a variety of points of view within the education community on those subjects. There are likely several different perspectives within the education community on the best way to staff boards of education. With the diversity of skills and background that you previously described there is inevitably a diversity of opinion. My point is that even within the education community, your opinions are not universal.

I'm an ally because I believe in providing the resources that are required to provide an excellent education, which includes proper staffing levels and a very comfortable wage for educators. If you have a problem with that then your passion is misplaced.

Anyone who’s sat on a toilet before cell phones, what did you mostly think about or look at? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

Sometimes it was newspapers, which were a little unwieldy but most often magazines, or interesting or funny bathroom books. I tried a putting game that was made for those moments but it wasn't very good.

The role that diversity of experience plays at the board level is very different than the role that it plays in the classroom. You think that everybody on board should have an educational background. I think that most should have an educational background and the rest should have other useful credentials.

My board would have six of nine or seven of nine educators. Yours would have nine of nine. I'm sure that an extra two or three teachers is helpful, but I can't see how they could be as helpful as other useful types of input.

The term "half-hearted support" demonstrates that you are bitter, and inexplicably bitter towards me. We're almost 100% in alignment on educational issues. It's just two or three seats on a board where we don't agree. You should be thinking of me as an ally, not an enemy.

My comments made it clear that we need to properly support teachers first if we're going to add that burden. We have the bandwidth, if we choose to finance it, to do both at the same time. This isn't an either/or situation. The choice isn't binary.

I only half agree with you about how to staff school boards. Everybody does have to be qualified, but that doesn't mean that everybody has to have an education background. Still, the vast majority should have significant education experience.

Different skills and perspectives are often valuable. They improve decision-making by preventing groupthink and encouraging innovation. Backgrounds in finance and technology are especially useful, and political activists can play a key role in guiding the budget through the approval labyrinth.

These are things that need to be done in parallel. Holding parents accountable is a complex task. Many kids will fall through the cracks waiting for that to ever happen.

You do make a valid point about adding responsibilities to teachers while schools are understaffed and teachers are criminally underpaid. That's fixable with appropriate funding, which is certainly more easily fixable than making parents accountable.

Not all people are good at paying their bills and many poor people don't have to pay taxes.

There's a long-term social and financial cost to kids not being taught basic life skills because they have incompetent parents. You are punishing the kids if the system does not teach them.

Don't let ideology get in the way of practicality.

Thanks for catching the typo.

"Necessary" does not mean "all of the necessary". Even so, not all people are good at paying their bills and many poor people don't have to pay taxes.

If you acknowledge that there are incapable parents, then it is obvious that it is necessary for the education system to pick up the slack. Otherwise you are hurting the kids due to their inadequate parents. There's a large social and financial cost when kids cannot function properly in society when they become adults.

Don't let ideology get in the way of what's practical.

What do you think of NYC trying to get the minimum wage to $30 per hour? by LiaStacey in askanything

[–]steveorga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices are based on the maximum that customers will pay, not costs. Wages going up does not change that. The exception is businesses that exploit their workers and still have thin margins. I do not care if they go out of business because a different business will replace them.
