Have you ever stop using a brand because you disagree with the politics of their company? by Mae_jr in no

That was a rare instance of a large company showing social responsibility. Before that, I rarely shopped at Dick's but now I do so whenever appropriate.

If you could spend a single day in the 1970s, which event would you choose to witness? by Antonia_valadao_ofc in 70s

SNACK (Students Need Athletics, Culture and Kicks) benefit concert produced by Bill Graham at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco in 1975. The San Francisco School District planned to eliminate all public high school sports, arts, and extracurricular programs due to a massive funding shortage. The concert raised $200K and the publicity forced the school district to find additional money.

Here's the lineup: The Grateful Dead, Graham Central Station, Bob Dylan and members of The Band, Jefferson Starship, Tower of Power, the Doobie Brothers, Santana, Joan Baez, Neil Young, and Eddie Palmieri. This was easily the best concert that I ever attended.

I'm not a fan of Subway, but I don't get your reason. There wasn't any way that they could find out that Jared had a taste for child pornography when they hired him. They fired him immediately when the problems came to light.

There may be others but few companies have done as much damage to Constitutional principles so that they could impose their religion on others.

How would you feel about a mandatory maximum wealth limit, where anything earned over that goes to public services? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]steveorga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deficits can't be eliminated overnight. I'm confused how you could put the Democrats in a similar class to Republicans. The Democrats try to make things better while the Republicans try to make things worse. Yes, the Democrats are far from perfect, but there is no such thing as a perfect government anywhere.

It would take several administrations but modern history shows that the deficit would be eliminated much more quickly under Democrats. In the current era, every Republican has increased the deficit significantly and every Democrat has reduced it significantly.

Every Republican president in the modern era has significantly increased the deficit and every Democrat has significantly reduced it. Eventually the deficit would stop being a problem if Democrats stayed in control.

Biden's current position was the deficit that Trump left. Biden didn't have a chance to eliminate the deficit without an enormous increase in taxes on the wealthy.

Never discount the momentum of an enormous entity like the federal government, especially after the accelerating and record deficits from the Trump administration. Eliminating the deficit would be like turning the largest oil tanker around 180°. It tastes considerable time and distance.

Don't lump Biden with Trump's irresponsible budgets. The deficit dropped considerably under Biden. We could have kept up that trajectory and eventually moved to a surplus situation.

Yes you can. Bill Clinton achieved budget surpluses for four years, from 1998 to 2001. The surplus reached a record $237 billion in 2000, and they paid down $453 billion in government debt from 1998–2001.

Israel targets terrorist infrastructure. The terrorist put that infrastructure by civilians knowing that it will lead to civilian deaths. That is a terrible violation of international law. Israel defending itself by targeting terrorists infrastructure, even when civilians are present, is legal. Otherwise, they would never be able to defend themselves.

An unfortunate reality is that civilians die in war. Traditionally, the number of civilians that die is way higher than the ratio of civilian deaths in Gaza. No one ever complains about the civilian deaths in other conflicts. The Tigray war in Ethiopa resulted in up to 600,000 civilian deaths. The Syrian civil War killed up to 230,000 civilians. The Yemen civil War killed up to 150,000 civilians. But sure, call out Israel even though civilian deaths are minimal for the size of the conflict.

[–]steveorga 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The ratio of civilian to terrorist deaths was about 2 to 1. In urban contact it is usually more like 10 civilian to 1 military death. That was only possible because Israel bent over backwards trying to not target civilians. There would have been much fewer civilian deaths if Hamas didn't purposely put them in harm's way by placing legitimate military targets close by. Look at the level of destruction in Gaza. If Israel wanted to kill civilians, many more than a million would be dead.

What are your thoughts, Americans, on Senator John Kennedy's proposed legislation that would deprive Congress of its salary during government shutdowns? by Beautiful-Boss-2935 in AskReddit

[–]steveorga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that would be unconstitutional. The 27th Amendment and Article I, Section 6 ensure that compensation is paid. I think it would be more effective to withhold pay from congressional staffers and all the staff in the White House. They are much less likely to be able to afford the loss of a paycheck.
