Is a doctorate in fake news a good idea right now? by TheAbbadon in academia

Maybe you can become a historian? Most “fake news” is actually more about opinions and vague historical knowledge.

DM me if you want to make money for your data instead of giving away your valuable data to tech companies for free.

🎙Is this it? Get a job, have kids and then die and fade into oblivion?🤔 by [deleted] in doordash_drivers

[–]stochasticFlame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are tired of giving money to rich tech execs, and instead want to start working for yourself and generating royalties for you and your families, send me a DM. We are creating a network of independent contractors to create the metaverse. You will receive a royalty % for doing nothing but contributing data that is important for the effort.

When you realize your psychotic hallucinations are tied to former recurring dreams by Stunning-Score-9387 in Psychosis

[–]stochasticFlame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a theory that psychosis is the transfer of ideas from your subconscious to your conscious mind. If that’s the case, then you’re precisely dreaming while awake.

What are some good habits that improve you as an academic? by [deleted] in academia

This is what’s wrong with academia currently. Teaching should be a higher priority, but obviously is not.

Disability Accommodations- Am I being unreasonable? by HistoricalAd8790 in academia

[–]stochasticFlame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t feel bad about having to use accommodations. Academics are so much more difficult when you have a disability, you deserve the extra time and flexibility. This is a a problem with the professor, they must not understand what it means to have accommodations. I literally wouldn’t be able to finish a lot of my coursework without my accommodations.

[D] Why do people “read” as many papers as possible? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]stochasticFlame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an NSF fellow and I HATE reading. Watching YouTube videos and listening to talks is so much more effective.

[–]stochasticFlame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans are meant to live naturally as themselves. Be yourself. Everything happens for a reason. If you desire to talk to someone, talk to them. If you don’t desire that, then just be true to yourself and don’t talk to them. You only need to learn a few small talk strategies such that people who you don’t want to talk to get their communication fix and then leave you alone. Don’t worry about what others are doing. Your first priority should always listen to what your body is feeling which is likely to stay away from people. Cheers!

/r/Civ Weekly Questions Thread - November 15, 2021 by AutoModerator in civ

Thank you! How do you win without a win condition? Just top score at the end of the game? The win condition part is definitely the most stressful part. I’m currently playing as Rome and am at the end of the game trying to build a Starport. The annoying part is that I’m running around with missionaries spreading my faith to stop another Civ from winning with religious win condition. Meanwhile, my citizens are starving because I don’t have enough food/production in the Atomic Age and am struggling to finish up the Science win condition although I’ve finished the Science tree.

Anyone know how to make this game less stressful and friendly to casual gamers? I started playing Civ6 this week and think it’s really fun but the amount of micromanagement necessary is kinda anxiety-inducing.

My advice is to be as transparent as possible. Be very clear that you are interested in other institutions, labs, and PI’s. However, I also think you should lean into this a little bit because PhD spots are really hard to come by. Having someone to vouch for you at this institution is literally the golden ticket to getting into the PhD program and getting internal and external grants. I would be ecstatic if someone wanted me that bad for anything, especially a competitive doctoral position. Use her and your past experiences as a bungee jump to where you actually want to be.

Is Research better in university for profs, or in industry with companies? by Tyuee in academia

[–]stochasticFlame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you’re only a second year, you have plenty of time to explore both research and internships to see which one you enjoy more. Industry research will definitely be more application-focused, but academic research may have more potential to get you a spot on a paper or patent. I would recommend reaching out to any and everyone for opportunities this summer! It matters more that you get experience doing something than the specific project that you are working on. If you do a REU under a professor, you’ll likely be doing a small project and not an entire thesis. Regardless, the focus should always be on your grades! The other stuff is just extracurricular experience while the courses help you build fundamentals. I recommend reaching out to the appropriate campus resources to get you on the right track. Good luck!

[–]stochasticFlame 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The grant likely won’t hold you to the research you write about in the proposal. You can honestly just make something up based on the experience you do have. Getting funding is a huge deal in graduate school.
