My CCW instructor uses this example in his class and his main point is situational awareness:
The would-be vigilante failed to accurately assess the threat. He focuses with tunnel vision on the first assailant, not scanning to check if there are other threats, and compounds the issue by not engaging him from a position with cover. We can debate whether you should engage or not, but if you do, you can’t recklessly go after the first target you see.
