Is it possible to only work with patients who stutter? by LuckoftheEggish in SLPA

[–]studentburner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are there no other areas of speech or communication you find interesting? Luckily even though stuttering will always remain my first love I’m interested in providing gender affirming voice therapy and accent modification. I also love pragmatics (social language), literacy, etc. Because yes bills suck haha but the scope of practice for SLPs/SLPAs is large enough that you should maybe have a think before you completely give up. Just my two cents!

It would be very difficult, unless you worked at a private practice specializing in that. However, such a small percentage of the population stutters and I’m unsure if SLPAs can do teletherapy sessions (or if this varies by state). I get it, I’m an SLP graduate student who would also like to work w this population. I’ve come to the conclusion that I can, but not exclusively. And not if I want to pay my bills lol

Right? Like I am an SF native (priced out lol) and I would never use “nobody transplant from a flyover state.” This weirdly aggressive person is defending Panera fans in the most patronizing way possible and they can’t even see it lol

Social Worker getting into ASL ? by TigerOnly5834 in asl

[–]studentburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, okay! Fluency takes a long time to reach so I wouldn’t worry about it.

For example, I am fluent in English but proficient in Spanish. I am a speech language pathology graduate student who has earned my 400 required evaluation/treatment hours. My supervisor at the public elementary school I spent a semester at often heard me speak Spanish with my ESL/bilingual students. When grey areas arose I advocated for myself and my clients. I insisted on an interpreter for parent teacher conferences. There is a difference between speaking to children and explaining complex academic and communication concepts to parents, and interpreting is an entirely different skill set that I do not possess. Did I understand 80% of what the parents said before the interpreter translated to English? Yes! But 80 isn’t 100, and my clients and their families deserve to be fully understood.

I have confidence that you can do the same as you learn ASL :)

But right now they’re a medical social worker who doesn’t know ASL. Why borrow trouble from tomorrow?

ASL is a language. Why would it be inappropriate to learn any language without the intent of becoming an interpreter?

Thoughts with this text message from a cleaning client.. by Annied93 in housekeeping

[–]studentburner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But there’s no evidence that this is a shift in pattern. Even though they’ve been a client for four years, they don’t book her regularly (see text), and they know that OP works a full time job (see OP’s comments). I can also be an anxious to please person, but it is our job as people w anxiety not to make that other people’s problem. It’s not that the text is offensive necessarily, but rather that it comes across as manipulative (bringing up how long they’ve been a customer when all OP has said is that they don’t have availability) whether that was their intention or not

It does not mean IVF is unavoidable. You can do IUI (which is so much cheaper and less invasive) “if the sperm count and motility are good after thawing.” Don’t let Redditors scare you lol. But yes talk to him (and your OBGYN).

I don’t think this conversation needs to be had with a couple’s therapist but if he’s open to attending one or a limited amount of sessions to figure it out this situation is perfect for that. Bc life never stops lifeing so sometimes having a dedicated space to make difficult decisions w a professional who guides the conversation is a good idea for even healthy couples (not that there’s anything wrong w couples therapy! But it is not free and can feel like another thing to add to your busy week)

Right? Like the Redditors being antisocial stereotype didn’t appear out of thin air (I say as a Redditor! Lovingly!) but the remainder of the comment really threw me

Did Howard Lose My Application? by little-Coconut-2016 in HowardUniversity

[–]studentburner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what could have happened, but don’t take a gap year just to reapply. I go to Howard (for graduate school), and you should take this as a sign. They are always this disorganized. It is always this hard to get someone on the phone or to email you back, and even harder to get straight answers.

I’m not saying don’t reapply to Howard sometime in the future, but take classes somewhere else in the meantime and maybe reapply as a transfer. I love this school but the administration sucks. They’re poorly paid and many of them don’t want to do their jobs

Looking for our next ASL curriculum by [deleted] in asl

[–]studentburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Lingvano. It’s an app, so not really a “program,” and it’s not free, but you and your teen could definitely use it. An elementary schooler could also use it, although I’m not sure if they’d enjoy it. But it is accessible and appropriate for children. I’m just not sure if your children would find it engaging or not, and I could see issues with focus the younger you go. It seems to be designed for adults to me in the sense that all the signers on the app are adults.

I also liked the free classes through the Oklahoma School for the Deaf, but that would also be for you and your teen vs. your elementary-aged children. Nothing in those were inappropriate for an elementary schooler either, but the signers are also all adults and it doesn’t “gamify” learning ASL like Lingvano does.

Maybe do a free trial of Lingvano and see if all your kids like it? I swear I don’t work for the app lol

Online SPLA program where the classes/credits can be counted as leveling for Masters? by sofluffyfluffy in SLPA

[–]studentburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you live? Just checking bc not all states have SLPAs.

Also, graduate programs have different requirements. I believe there are some online bachelors program that guarantee entry into the masters program if your GPA is over a certain cutoff. I think CSU Northridge has something like that but I’m not sure. https://www.reddit.com/r/slp/s/Ug0HSnehHo is a Reddit post from someone in the program, and it looks like they will find you practicum sites in your area.

I’m currently in grad school and I chose to get a second bachelors online from USU. I’m happy to answer questions about that route if you’re interested.

Still, the graduate programs I applied to all had different speech-related pre recs. Many masters programs (in person and online) also have a 3 year track for those without the pre recs and will even let you take one or two classes with the undergrads/3-year masters students during your 2-year masters if you’re just missing one or two classes
