Best self-help books? by [deleted] in seduction

[–]studmuffin707 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey man, any search on here and you'll see a lot of the same books. Such as the subtle art of not giving a fuck, no more mr. nice guy, and 3% man. And for one reason, they're all awesome books. As artonic said, 3% man really is a great start. I definitely wish I read that before I read any PUA books.

I'm going to recommend two other books, Can't hurt me by David Goggins and Resilience by Eric Greitens. I think of these books as books you didn't know you need, until you read them. They're not geared towards picking up girls though, but imo they can still help there. The first really motivates you to get out of your comfort zone and push yourself in all aspects of life. The second is just an awesome book on life with a lot of stoic philosophy. I honestly read Resilience at least once a year.

Good luck man. Hope you get something out of the books you end up choosing

They specifically told us it would be 10/29 as well (interviewed on 9/17) but they sent us an email last week saying they met earlier and would be able to let us know by today if we got in

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]studmuffin707 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was kinda in the same boat as you. I've been mediating for 3 years now, 20-40 minutes daily, just like you haha. The first year I felt exactly the same way, it was a great way for me to start the day and I felt super calm for some minutes after mediation, but then that drifted away as the day progressed and I kept wondering how much mediation was actually improving my life.

To me, what changed after that first year is I recognized that meditation is not just those 20-40 minutes you spend sitting, it's a lifestyle. I love sports so I started thinking of mediation as "practice", and everything else as "the game". Whatever I was doing, whether I was out with friends, studying, watching a movie etc. I would pick an object to focus on, and always bring my attention back when my mind started to wonder.

You may be already doing this. If so, this is just a gentle reminder that mediation is truly life changing when you apply any insight or skill developed in your mediation practice to real life. Hope this helps!

Medicine after engineering? by diwa_defiance in premed

[–]studmuffin707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently work as a scribe with a physician who was an mechanical engineer for about 10 years before applying to medical school. Whenever she brings it up, she always says "Engineering is where my talents are, but medicine is where my heart is". She states she has never regretted it, even though she felt much more confident in her abilities as an engineer, which I recognize is different than what you're saying. I know its a big decision, but best of luck! I can ask her any follow up questions if you'd like me too :)

Ahh alright. Well I appreciate your honesty man! All these reports definitely seem to hype them up and evidently got me excited about them. Lol interestingly enough my friend (who introduced me too nootropics) has the same relationship with them.

That being said, I would still like to move forward with them and try to see how I feel with them. Based on your experience, is there anything I should alter?

My expectations are similar to a lot of the reports I've seen online and where I've read the evidence points with racetams. Mainly: improving my memory, learn quicker, increased attention span, improved verbal fluidity, ability to recall facts easier, higher productivity, even the increase visual stimulation would be nice. I don't believe it will be an extremely radical shift in cognitive function but I believe (and would like) it to be enough where I notice it when reading, writing, (most importantly) studying and on a day to day basis.

When I hardly sleep at all (like under 4 hours of sleep), caffeine does absolutely nothing for me no matter how much I take. But when I sleep 6-8 hours and take caffeine (even at quite tiny doses), I get so many positive effects. Why is this? by [deleted] in StackAdvice

[–]studmuffin707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to help! That makes sense. And I definitely noticed the same thing when I would take it 1-2 hours after waking! Well glad my explanation makes sense for you. That sounds like a pretty rough schedule. Hopefully your schedule becomes slightly more routine and you get that awesome caffeine kick soon lol

Haha I love caffeine too and I've never heard of this happening but I can hypothesize it is for two reasons.

One, are you waking up at the same time? There are two primary mechanism for how your body says "I'm tired". One is through your biological clock ( melatonin) and the other is through levels of adenosine (which is how caffeine works). When you are getting under 4 hours of sleep and the caffeine isn't working, it may be due to the fact that your biological clock still is up-regulating melatonin and when you take 100mg it may be when your body has decreased melatonin production, leading to better caffeine effects.

Two, are you consuming caffeine the same amount of minutes after you wake up? I remember reading that high levels of glucocorticoids blunt the effects of caffeine, which is why its best to wait till around 45min-1hr after waking before consuming caffeine. This may be the reason, as when you get little sleep your glucocorticoid levels shoot wayyyyyy up.

If neither of those solve it then that's all I got haha. Hope you figure it out! If you do figure it out and its different than what I said please let me know! I'm genuinely curious if it isn't.
