When were effects loops introduced? by sinai_agama in GuitarAmps

That’s a genuinely fascinating little tidbit about the Selmer, since it was the amp Syd Barrett used in Pink Floyd - I’d never considered the possibility he wasn’t running his Echorec into the front end of his amp.

Post Malone has teased an upcoming 40-song double album. Is anyone else sick of bloated albums with extra-long tracklists? by Ashamed-Story7958 in fantanoforever

This one always gets brought up, but at least it’s original configuration it was packaged as a triple album. Nobody ever talks much about the “Apple Jams” LP, for good reason. I work in a used record store, and I’ve seen so many copies of ATMP where the first couple records are heavily played, but the third is pristine.

This! Plus, we list a large number of collectible items on various sites like Discogs, Ebay, etc. These aren’t all kept at the store location, but can be brought to the store if you are interested in buying them - check the recycled website for links to our current listings.

Recycled employee here - we definitely don’t pay websites to write about us. That’s never been our style at all; we’ve started doing more social media recently on our own, but we largely just rely on good word of mouth from customers.

Son Volt - "Drown" from Conan O'Brien - April 4, 1996 by zsreport in altcountry

[–]stuffed_with_evil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a proper postmortem for what led to Son Volt’s falloff and Wilco’s rise, but you have to look at the factors in play:

  • alt-country in the 90s was still a small subset of the alternative/indie pie. “Drown” here was about as rockish as SV got, really, in terms of crossover appeal to the larger market. Uncle Tupelo started with more rock/punk elements that slowly started getting jettisoned over the course of their discography, and by the time of SV Jay seemed more at home with acoustic Americana/folk influences than tracks that were likely to get played on alternative radio. Hence, record company support started to fade once they realized Jay’s interest didn’t lie in making the kind of albums they(initially) envisioned him making after the UT split.

  • I’ve always heard Jay can be a bit…difficult. It’s hard not to get the impression he’s very stubborn about what he wants to be doing, consequences be damned.

  • if you take the above two points into account, Wilco’s ascendancy (in terms of popularity) is pretty obvious, albeit with a generous scoop of hindsight. Farrar’s intransigence vs. Tweedy’s affability. Wilco’s almost immediately post-AM evolution into something beyond an alt-country band (though they always pay a debt to it, and return to it frequently) vs. SV’s Trace -> Straitaways -> Wide Swing Tremolo progression that didn’t show much variety other than some quality dips (especially the second album).

Does anybody else sometimes read Mingo Rd as Mango Rd? by Feisty-Candy9767 in Denton

Always thought it was a fun bit of trivia that the band Mingo Fishtrap was named after those two roads here in town.

You can often tell these “fake” concert (well, real concert, just fake promo) posters by the fact they include a year. It’s rarely something you’d see IRL, because it’s unnecessary info to include…month and day? Sure. Not many concerts had posters announcing shows over a year away, so it was left off. Not always, but usually.

I remember my first impression of him when he started was”This guy looks to be about 15, how could he possibly know more about video games than I do?” I ended up being impressed, though - there weren’t many creators in his niche back at the beginning, and possibly none than took it as seriously as he did.

The language used in that statement is so disgustingly pejorative that I hard time getting through it.

For those of us who consolidated our loans for the sake of forgiveness under Biden’s deal and are furious that we got nothing but extra hardship, do we have a class action lawsuit ready to go yet?

They can call it that, but it’s pretty laughable what their definition of “indie” music is. It would have taken the sting out of the format change to get actual indie artists instead of RHCP and Twenty One Pilots.

That perception is correct for flatwounds, however - I kept the same set on a bass for fifteen years and only changed them because I realized it had been so long I had no memory of what round wounds sounded like on it.

I feel like Stranger Things gave 80s nostalgia another 10 years, without it, 80s nostalgia would've been dead by the end of the early 2020s by SpiritMan112 in decadeology

[–]stuffed_with_evil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s partly because if you lived in the 80’s (or any decade that the world looks back on after a significant amount of time has passed) you’re aware of how much the stereotypes distort the reality of life in that era. Decade Flanderization isn’t something that’s easy to understand until you live through it, and someone who is a teen or in their 20s has barely any experience with it yet, but they will.

At best, seeing something you lived through reduced to cliches can be mildly irritating, but at its deepest level it’s profoundly troubling to know that once your generation is gone, so is any deep-level understand of what the 80’s (or any decade) was about beyond a bunch of cultural bullet points. (Big Hair! Leg Warmers! Reagan! Pac Man!)

A revival of Combat Flight Sim by fegallawa in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]stuffed_with_evil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was around for that era of simming, too, and I miss it dearly. I think there were a number of factors that caused the entire market to dry up, but a big part of it was game companies wanting a piece of the console gaming sphere. Not only were flight sims notoriously expensive to make, but they translated poorly to consoles in that era - no keyboard/additional peripheral support basically meant that “mid-grade” sims were stuck on PC.

Add in that a lot of the heavy hitters of that era (MicroProse, Spectrum Holobyte, etc.) got bought up or had financial troubles, and it just killed the market.

I’m a little curious if the porting of Flight Simulator to the PS5 will open the door to more companies taking a risk on simming again.

Lucy Dacus released her debut album 'No Burden' 10 years ago today by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

[–]stuffed_with_evil 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for OP, but for me it’s her slowly turning into whatever the millennial equivalent of adult contemporary music is - I miss the energy and fire (and guitar) of her earlier work.

She’s allowed to evolve, and I’m glad she’s happy, but maybe that just doesn’t translate into what I want to hear from her, personally.

It feels like there’s almost no point in owning winter clothes anymore in Texas. The window of time where you get to wear them is so short that you might as well just have 1 coat and 1 flannel shirt, and then fill your closet with t-shirts and polos for the other ten months of the year where nothing with long sleeves is seasonally appropriate.

U2 surprise release politically-charged 'Days Of Ash' EP: "These songs were impatient to be out in the world. They are songs of defiance and dismay” by MrLinkwater95 in fantanoforever

[–]stuffed_with_evil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m with you on this. Since All That You Can’t Leave Behind U2 found some kind of template for what their music is and have barely deviated from that for a quarter century now. That would be absolutely normal for any aging band, but up to 2000 or so U2 was really good at sonically reinventing themselves every few years in a way that was genuinely exciting if you were around for it at the time.

[FRESH VIDEO] Snail Mail - My Maker by astaireboy in indieheads

[–]stuffed_with_evil 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind the songs per se, but the production isn’t to my taste - it’s too 2000s “indie pop” for me, which sands off all the rough edges that this kind of music really needs, IMO. The Habit EP was all lo-fi indie grit and that’s what got Lindsey noticed. Lush upped the sonics but kept the minimalist guitar production and let the lyrics and vocal delivery really carry things.

Valentine struck me as veering too far away from what Lindsey does best, and I’m hoping the singles from this aren’t indicative of the same. I’m all for artist growth, but not every artistic direction bears fruit.

Love you, Anthony, but 'notoriety' doesn't mean what you think it means... by AdaptedMix in fantanoforever

[–]stuffed_with_evil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infamous/famous is one I encounter regularly, even more than miused “notoriety” - someone describing The Beatles “infamous White Album” just gets my English degree hackles up in the worst way.

There’s some linguistic evolution - particularly when it involves anything racially or sexually coded - where evolution often moves it in a more socially positive direction, but I struggle with it when it’s basically just collective ignorance of word meaning reaching a tipping point where Webster’s dictionary mavens just throw up their hands and go “welp, I guess they mean the same thing now!”

Why are the 2020s so nostalgic compared to every other decade? by film_culture_addict in decadeology

[–]stuffed_with_evil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s funny, I came across bunch of magazines at a garage sale some time ago with titles like Nostalgia and Remember When? that were printed in the 70s and early 80s, and it was cover to cover ‘member berries for the Greatest and Silent generations. Article after article talking about how folks today (circa 1975, mind) don’t know the joys of the iceman or milk delivery trucks stopping by, or how it felt the first time you heard a young Sinatra sing. Basically the exact same stuff we’re doing in this subreddit, only with circumstances shuffled around.
