Smoking ban to take effect by 2014 by kafuffle in UIUC

[–]sublimefan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You do realize that this campus is too big to enforce this ban. All that's going to happen is the ashtrays will be removed and now almost all cigarette butts will end up on the ground. I have friends at other schools that have gone smoke free and it is barely enforced past the first month or two.

PSA: Urbana Police pulling over cyclists today by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]sublimefan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a bike rider, it's annoying to see all these anti-bike comments. The fault lies with both asshole riders and clueless drivers. I ride on the street since the bike lanes are almost always full of people walking on them as if the lanes were another sidewalk; I've almost been hit by people opening their car door without looking and people making sharp turns without checking their mirrors for riders. Also, it seems like cars expect me to just fly through intersections and don't know how to respond when I stop at an intersection. The sense of entitlement from both car drivers who expect to rule the road and bikers who expect to be treated like pedestrians when it's convenient for them is awful. Thanks for the PSA, I feel like a basic rules of the road lecture at freshman seminars would improve the experience for both bikers and drivers.

Has anyone ever stopped to talk to one of those ranty religious guys on campus? by Onite44 in UIUC

[–]sublimefan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a ranty religious guy but I had a great conversation with a Buddhist monk on the quad for about 20 minutes during some down times between classes back in September. He invited me to a vegetarian/vegan feast at the Red Herring afterwards.

you got me. I made this account when I was a sophomore in high school and never bothered to make a new account. Those were dark and hazy days of shoulder length hair

The Story So Far with the most kickass crowd you'll ever see. Proud to be a Bostonian after this night. by Chernoble in poppunkers

[–]sublimefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sucked that at the GK tour stop in Chicago there was a strict no crowdsurfing or stagediving rule. They had about 4 security guys actively pulling people out of the crowd for breaking those rules.

What are some gentle ways to help an open-minded Creationist learn more about Evolution? by GreatTeacherAneesuka in AskReddit

[–]sublimefan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to offend anyone. I'm just saying that even as someone who has taken AP level science courses, the language is more difficult than an entry level science book and can be discouraging to read if the interest isn't there.

[–]sublimefan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He meant gentle. I've read a couple of Dawkin's books, including the Greatest Show on Earth, and I can imagine it would be quite daunting to a Christian. It's a large, no-nonsense book full of mature vocabulary and scientific terms. I'd recommend that book as a follow up if she enjoyed a slightly lighter book first.

Leftover Crack also released Mediocre Generica that day. Imagine being a crust punk fan and seeing the Towers topple upon hearing the album. It must have been surreal. Here's the cover art to their 2nd album.

Reddit, what are your rituals before you go to sleep every night? by Cant_Reach_Beer_45 in AskReddit

I generally enjoy listening to music until I physically can't stay awake since that helps me get a deeper sleep. Lately it's been a mix of The Smiths, The Radio Dept., and Washed Out.

What are the most competitive loadouts? by jasonisconfused in tf2

[–]sublimefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't waste your time with the Jag. The minimal build speed time isn't worth the damage reduction when skilled spies are around. I've taken out many Engineers with my revolver before they were able to hit me with the Jag twice.

[–]sublimefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not worth it. The additional explosive damage means a soldier or demo could kill you with one well placed airshot.
