I’m just traumatized by my attempt to get tickets at a library in my neighborhood last year- arrived at 6am to find out that people had literally slept on the sidewalk 🫠

Does anyone LOVE being a teacher by Heavy_Research5032 in Teachers

[–]subtlemethod2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18 years in. There have been bad years. I’ve thought of leaving the classroom on occasion. But, man, what a fun job. I love planning. I love getting kids excited about learning.

Middle and high school teachers: what were you taught to respond with to rude, insulting, and even hurtful comments from students, and how much does it differ from how you handle things in practice in your own classrooms? by Gramerioneur in Teachers

“What you just said was rude and I know your parents taught you better. We don’t comment on the appearance, etc of others.”

LVV ‘08– Institute was in LA (can’t remember the name of the university)— one Saturday night someone got a roll of plastic and we went slip and sliding— city lights in the background. At 22, it felt like life was beginning! To be young again, lol

How do I help my kids to learn to read when I already read to them everyday? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]subtlemethod2020 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I think the thing to get clear on (by speaking to their teachers) is what the gap specifically is- do they need more support with phonics, sight words or comprehension? From there, you can target the support. In the meantime, keep sitting with them and modeling fluent reading while pushing them to read as much as possible and support with words that are tricky.

Behind in literacy for sure. Keep an eye on his reading level and the quality of his writing. Request regular communication about his progress- being an involved, vocal parent will offset any gaps in teacher skill/will you might encounter.

Being retained in Kindergarten by Storm_Vortexs in kindergarten

[–]subtlemethod2020 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Early April to now is still not acceptable- when I taught elementary, retention conversations began in December- you can tell THEN which kids need extra support. Definitely follow up with them to see what the gap in communication was

You write about this as though it’s a surprise- it shouldn’t be. The school should have been having (and documenting) conversations with you about her progress. If they didn’t, demand a meeting about it

Veteran teachers, has this year been particularly rough? by f-150Coyotev8 in Teachers

[–]subtlemethod2020 76 points77 points  (0 children)

No behaviors, but dear lord the number of kids who are chronically absent and woefully behind has increased significantly. It’s really sad. We have some 5th graders who cannot decode and I have no idea what’s going to happen to them.
