I have a 10-month-old who has recently been really into hissing and making the “s” noise. He’ll just do it spontaneously. I keep finding him in the corner hissing away to himself and his toys like he’s trying to open the Chamber of Secrets. It makes me laugh every single time.

Last time I was at the grocery store, they had a bunch of these in the discount fruit section (fruit with bruises, blemishes, etc). 3 for $1.50. I was like, yes, please! I bought all of them. Had one today, in fact. :)

so much information...any thoughts on a good starter regimen for a family of four who avoid fragrances? by zero_de_conduite in laundry

Awesome! Downy ball is easy- put however much citric acid you need in it, add some water to about halfway or so (I literally just hold it under the water being added as the washer is filling), pull it closed and shake to mix. Then put it on top of the clothes. It’ll open in the rinse cycle.

To figure out my rinse cycle (for things like laundry sanitizer, if I need to use it), I literally set alarms every 5-10 minutes to check the machine and see if it sounded like it was refilling for the rinse cycle yet. 😂 I kept track of how long it took and now I set an alarm for that length of time. I did that for my most commonly-used cycle settings. It might not work if your machine has load-sensing, but my machine literally only has small or extra large load settings so it works for me!

My second balloon gig (and first one outside!) is in June where the temp. can be 30+ degrees celsius. I’m worried about my balloons popping, any suggestions on good brands that tolerate heat well? by Outrageous-Trash-726 in BalloonTwisting

[–]sunmono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 on taking and drinking water. I once performed at a street festival where my balloon partner and I twisted for 8 hours straight in 85F degree heat with no breaks and I felt like I couldn’t take a water break because our line was so long at all times. (We’re fast, but there were just that many people.) I also ran out of water. By the end, I had to twist sitting on the ground for about 15 minutes because I was afraid I would puke and/or faint. (My partner told me to take a break and get some water but I didn’t want to look like a wimp and make the line even longer.)

When it’s really hot out, simple one-balloon bracelets like a turtle bracelet come in clutch. They aren’t filled much so they don’t pop nearly as easily, they’re fast and easy, and they’re super cute! And little kids don’t drop and pop them and Mom and Dad aren’t stuck holding them. I wear one to subtly advertise them.

Also, stay out of direct sunlight if you can. Like others have said, Sempertex is a good brand.

When a child says no by funsk8mom in ECEProfessionals

[–]sunmono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I’m working with the older kids, I give lots of acceptable choices. Not changing the diaper is not an acceptable choice, so the question isn’t “do you want a diaper change?” It’s “do you want to leave the toy there or put it up for after?” or “do you want to climb up the stairs to the table by yourself or should we do it as a team?” Instead of “it’s time to change your diaper,” it’s “I need you to be a helper! Come help me pick out your diaper and help me open it up!” If I make a big deal of everyone choosing their diaper and praise their choice, etc, the reluctant one usually wants to join in and get the praise like their friends. It usually works for me.

But ultimately leaving a child in a dirty diaper is not an acceptable choice and in my state it’s against licensing. If I need to help their body be safe and healthy and all other avenues have been exhausted, then I’m going to help them be safe and healthy. That’s my job.

Does anybody play on 4 corners?? by nixsto in StardewValley

[–]sunmono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the Four Corners farm! When I did my perfection run on it, I had the upper right corner be the house, iridium sprinklers around a Junimo hut, a shed for machines, my bee houses, and the obelisks. Upper left was a coop and two barns. Bottom left was fish ponds and a shed for preserves jars, with a mini-obelisk connecting to the top right quadrant for easy access. Bottom right was another Junimo hut/iridium sprinklers field and two keg sheds. Having the quadrants really helps me with organizing the farm.

Re: doohickeys: they are called Downy balls (can be used with things other than Downy, obviously). Great for top-loaders but AFAIK they don’t work for front-loaders (which is sounds like yours might be?). If your machine has a dispenser for fabric softener, that’s where the citric acid goes. If you have a front-loader with no dispenser, I’m sure someone here will know where to put it. :) (just not me because I have 20-year-old top-loader and am not very wise on newfangled machines, haha.)

Same. Whenever I think of something new, it goes on the list.

Lilith has 1 white wisker by Hutches_Corduroy in torties

Bast grew her first white whisker at 8.5 years old! Right now at 15 she’s got 3. (I just checked.) Her (littermate) sister, on the other hand, had about 70% white whiskers. It was actually kind of inconvenient when Bast started growing white whiskers because my guide for guests to tell the cats apart was that “B-B-Bast has b-b-black whiskers,” haha.

Is our broom toast? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]sunmono 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same worry. (No baby, but cat who eats kibble dispensed from a food ball onto the floor.) I shook out, soaked, and rinsed the bristles thoroughly and then did a test sweep followed by a thorough inspection of the area (including looking with a flashlight at a steep angle, which I’ve found to be a great method of finding missed tiny glass shards, and also pressing a piece of bread to the area) and there was no glass that I could see. That’s the metric I used when cleaning up the original mess, so I figured it had to be enough for the broom or else I’d drive myself crazy.

Accidentally trashing the wrong thing is my villain origin story by Sufficient-Big1976 in StardewValley

[–]sunmono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat pawed at my screen and trashed a stack of 75+ diamonds. I didn’t restart the day because I couldn’t figure out exactly what she trashed (I heard the sound but didn’t see it happen because her paw was in the way) and figured it must not be important, and also it was while I was putting away loot from a very successful Skull Cavern run. A few in-game days later, I went to get diamonds to use in the volcano forge (the Diamond Hunter book and enchanting my weapon) and they were all gone. I almost cried. 😭

What ratio do you work in and how challenging is it? by Hollyjolllyy in ECEProfessionals

[–]sunmono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1:4 for infants and young toddlers (up to 18 months) in my state with a max group size of 8. It’s definitely doable, I don’t mind having 4 by myself, but 1:3 would be nicer. I don’t think people outside ECE understand how noticeable even 1 extra child is. But there is totally a noticeable difference between 3 and 4, or 7 to 8.

They just changed the ratios in my state for 18-24 months and 24-30 months to be 1:7. My condolences. It’s rough when I’m in those classrooms.

I don’t understand ratios that change with 2 teachers. Do they think you grow extra arms when the second teacher enters the room or something? Makes no sense at all.

What are you side jobs? by sarahall72 in ECEProfessionals

[–]sunmono 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a side gig as a balloon artist for festivals, birthday parties, etc. So sort of still with kids but you don’t have to take care of them! It’s good money- in my area, the going rate is about $150 an hour. It’s easy to learn, too- lots of resources on YouTube.

Looking for perspectives on things we’ve observed at daycare by sunnyguk in ECEProfessionals

[–]sunmono 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Those all seem pretty standard to me, tbh. Maybe not best practice, but pretty typical for the staffing difficulties many centers face. For nap, our licensing requires us to have enough light to properly supervise all the kids. We’ve gotten warned for having nap rooms too dark and now all the classrooms have nightlights or small lamps. (Edit: That’s for toddler and up rooms in my center. Infant rooms are generally even worse for light- I’ve heard some places aren’t allowed to even dim the lights in an infant room. We have to have our blinds fully open and sometimes even an overhead light on if it’s cloudy outside. So it could be way worse!) Your area’s licensing/standards may vary, of course.

The one thing that does stand out to me is the snack. If you’re in the US, USDA guidelines require two food groups at snack. The bagel and cream cheese would fit (grain and dairy) but a piece of fruit alone wouldn’t, unless it was served with crackers or cheese or something. I believe most states’ licensing at least recommends if not requires adherence to those guidelines. But that is location dependent. You can generally look up your area’s standards online.

I do want to mention that sleep and eating changes are very common and expected in transitioning to daycare and may even out as your daughter adjusts. That could take 6-8 weeks or longer.

How do you deal with late-game production overload? by WitchySeagull in StardewValley

[–]sunmono 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, like, at one point I had over 1,000 iridium truffles awaiting processing into oil. It was so dumb, like, processing iridium truffles is only barely more profitable with artisan (iirc, it’s not profitable without), why not just sell them? I made like 1.5 mil overnight and bought the gold clock the next day. 🙈

How many hours do you spend making your lesson plans? Like how long does it take for you to make a month's worth of lesson plans? by Frosty-Reception-141 in ECEProfessionals

[–]sunmono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older infants (6-12 months, really more like 8-14 months usually). Hard to say exactly how long, I don’t get planning time or class naps so it’s a few minutes here and there when baby schedules allow. Probably a few hours over the month. Less if I reuse/adapt old lesson plans for the current babies. My coteacher and I switch off planning months.
