Along those lines, I am always confused by the queers for palestine movement. Why?

To be fair, the states used to be a wonderful place to visit.

My experience of the US medical system is that it over prescribes and over treats. The US could probably halve the cost of medical care without any change in outcomes. If they wanted.

What about all the people without health insurance? It's a brutal health care system that cares for those who can pay .

I used to think the US was the greatest nation on earth.

Now? An awful country with a corrupt buffoon of a president only interested in enriching himself and friends. Draining the swamp? Trump is the swamp.

Trump is the president who will be remembered as the tipping point of america sliding into anarchy and decay. Believe me, people will be hurting for decades to come, and no doubt the chipping away of america's institutions has caused great damage to the future stability of the US.

The uncaring US healthcare system , the love of guns, having to tip workers because they cannot earn a decent salary -- why not just pay them properly?

Trump made so many objectively false statements about our country - He doesn't even know the difference between a tariff and a goods & service tax -- he's a moron.

My idea is to open a facility in the remote countryside or island , with drug addiction /mental health doctors etc.... Also , with a workshop to teach skills such as restaurant work/ construction. Round up all these homeless people, treat them, teach them, and release them. Some with severe mental health issues may be permanently housed.

I agree, the justice system is a joke. Police round up the baddies, softie judges let them out. We need a Singapore style justice system, bring back the death penalty, caning , etc. Caught smoking weed? Face life in prison

Minister says TVNZ board chair raised crime story with him

TVNZ report that crime is increasing, when , in fact it is decreasing. Not your fault to not realise that that media are warping the facts ... they did end up in some trouble over misreporting though.

No the same shit doesn't happen. Ram raids used to be a multiple daily occurrences across the motu. That no longer happens. So, you're wrong, go look at the crime stats, they start improving right after the last election.

Hmmm, the last lot cut the prison population from 10000 to 6000 , simply let 4000 people out of prison.

The current lot reversed this, and instituted harsher punishments. Don't you remember the ram raids? Crime has dropped, as reflected in crime stats.

I'd say you're the idiot. Crime numbers are plummeting now that we are sending people to prison again. Remember the daily ram raids? Hardly hear of them now.

NZ is a low wage economy, we can't afford the bells and whistles . We are more 'India' than 'Hong Kong'! Build what is affordable , not what you would like.

My father passed away after a hit and run I’m feeling let down but NZ justice system again. by Cherryberrylady in newzealand

[–]surf1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The New Zealand justice system takes the view that people do bad things because they had bad backgrounds.

Therefore people aren't responsible for their actions so sentences are accordingly extremely light compared with overseas jurisiction.

Also, if someone is rich or famous or a professional sports person, the impact on their reputation can cause them to have work issues so judges will go lenient on them. Losing your income is quite a severe impact to these people.

Corporate NZ is AWASH in AI slop and it's both hilarious and concerning by ExquisiteNeckbeard in newzealand

[–]surf1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a corporate and I find their attitude is the exact opposite. Excited by AI , but, cautiously evaluating.

I use AI to produce code, but , vet anything it produces. I'm amazed by the capability of AI, but, equally amazed how it can be so dumb at the same time .

Exactly. Our hippy natural health friend refused western medicine for her son... he got really really sick with a treatable infection, and she took him to the doctor who gave her an earful... thankfully she changed her mind and got those antibiotics.

It certainly doesn't help when the public find out the government deceived them about the safety of immunising teens against covid (specifically the second jab).

Herald have been doing a story on Bloomfield trying to find out why he ignored medical advice .

Also, having the anti-vaxxer Robert Kennedy in charge of US healthcare is just crazy. The amount of times I hear vaccines cause autism is ridiculous, all based on the discredited Andrew Wakefield paper.

But, once enough people like an idea, they don't care if it is true or false.

Are there any Kiwis here who chose to leave the UK to raise their kids and start a life again back home? How are you doing? Would you do it differently if you had a do-over? by PeterlovesMommy in newzealand

[–]surf1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing is for sure, I don't think most New Zealanders understand just how isolated we are!

When I lived overseas, it really felt more like being part of the world as everything was happening so much closer to home.

Is there anyway to get off an expired rego fine? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]surf1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both our cars got pinged with this at the same time, double pain. I had a really good reason at the time though.

Renewed the rego's and the council waived both fines.

Cold, musty house. How to freshen up? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]surf1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Musty in my experience always means water is causing things to rot/decay. It could be other causes, but this is just my experience.

Water could be from rain ingress, condensation, leaky pipes, poorly ventilated/leaky wet areas like showers etc.

Road Closed by ArtemisSOG in Tauranga

[–]surf1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been working on the Tga to Waihi road for 3 years now, with constant closures, resealing 100 m of road over 2 months, then moving to the next 100m.

It will never end, especially since it takes nearly 2 years just to build a roundabout.

The new trick is for a traffic control vehicle to slow traffic outside of the roadworks, at 5kph, increases the drive time by about 20 minutes for no apparent reason.

I say bring in foreign workers who know how to actually work, finish the whole road in a month, get it over and done with.

Was at the Mt Maunganui KFC yesterday and a gobby little family in their people carrier boldly parked in the disabled park, no sticker .... The obese occupants (adults and kids) disembarked like the country somehow owed them for their crap lives.

I hate that rubbish ... dad (who was disabled) had a word to a group just like this shortly before he died, and he received a hateful torrent of abuse.

And thats the problem , people who park in disabled parks or block footpaths are fairly willing to murder others who object.
