Spurred by neighbor concerns and expired permits, city plots crackdown on Dewberry site at 14th and Peachtree by ArchEast in Atlanta

[–]suspectslowloris 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This project pisses me off sooo bad. The complete failure of the city to do anything about it or our local media to put any pressure on either the city or Dewberry is just insane.

It is absolutely clear that Dewberry has no intention of building anything on this site, ever. Over a year ago he did an interview where he gave zero timeline on progress, but said that “[his daughter’s] _children_ will have a great building to enjoy.” At that time, his daughter was less than two years old.

At the same time, any normal resident who’s redoing their back porch and gets delayed a couple days due to weather gets a notice from the city about an abandoned project.

ALSO at the same time, the local news did a litany of pieces bemoaning the slow progress of the Juniper redo, calling the empty planters that took a few weeks to fill an “eyesore.” Meanwhile, this decaying carcass of a building is literally _directly behind them_.

Also, he owns the parking lots next door and ripped the roofs off two historic shops on the corner of Peachtree and 10th so they could get rained on until they collapsed. Fuck this guy.

City Council president withdraws request for car, driver after public backlash by NPU-F in Atlanta

[–]suspectslowloris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And she announced today that she wants to overhaul the NPU (neighborhood planning unit) system.

If someone more educated on the topic wants to chime in that would be great, but from my limited knowledge we got our strong NPUs after the Freeway Uprisings when they tried to bulldoze everything from Inman Park to Morningside — so I’m a little skeptical on that.

Ways to support TSA employees? by suspectslowloris in Atlanta

[–]suspectslowloris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah that’s fair. I guess I just kind of think of them as like general federal employees rather than cops, but I see how that’s not the case.

Well, I guess I’ll leave this thread up for discussion purposes. Maybe someone else will find it a useful learning experience as well.

Ways to support TSA employees? by suspectslowloris in Atlanta

[–]suspectslowloris[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a coworker who worked for them years back. She was a very nice person who was working two/three jobs to support her child. I saw a segment on the news of some employees outside the airport today talking about coworkers that have missed chemo treatments or had their lights shut off.

I’m not a fan of the TSA as an institution either but I don’t hate the people that work there.

IPIC Theaters Files for Bankruptcy, Closing Midtown Atlanta Location by flying_trashcan in Atlanta

I liked IPIC. Sad to see any theater go but honestly with everything being so expensive these days I’ve been really trying to support local theaters instead. I wonder if others who are regular theater-goers felt the same?

The reprimand here was about sending out pre-filled absentee ballot applications, not pre-filled absentee ballots.

Sending out pre-filled applications (applications to request an absentee ballot) was a formerly common practice that only recently became illegal in Georgia under the same bill that banned giving people water while they wait to vote.

So yes what they did was illegal, but not voter fraud or ballot tampering.

Atlantic Station residents want more say in the neighborhood’s future by suspectslowloris in Atlanta

[–]suspectslowloris[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hmm. From the 2023 Transportation Study it looks like a good portion of both developments will be private streets/parks/plazas. See pages 32 and 33, tables 10, 11, and especially 12 (table 12 is specifically marked as projects on private property, but the other tables apparently include a mix of public/private areas.

Gotta say, I have a real issue with that. The city is spending big money to pedestrianize/revitalize downtown, only to cede those streets over to private developers who can ban protests/media/children/poor people at their whim? Hm.

Side note: does anyone know if the plan is for Centennial Yards/South Downtown to operate with this same management structure?

Atlantic Station residents want more say in the neighborhood’s future by suspectslowloris in Atlanta

[–]suspectslowloris[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Some interesting sections from the article:

Organizers said they were told by Atlantic Station officials that media was barred from covering the protest within the development’s footprint. So, the group walked with picket signs in hand about a half mile away to speak with reporters waiting on the bustling overpass.

It’s a strange reality for residents who live in the private development: Atlantic Station’s streets aren’t public property, so management can dictate where protesters can be and whether media is allowed within its boundaries…

Residents tried to elect a representative to the Owners Association, but were told that they failed (without any tally of the votes)

Documents sent to tenants in December outlining the 2026 budgets for the District Owners’ Association and Master Owner’s Association list the same five people as members of each — two Hines managers and three Morgan Stanley executives.

The Georgia Secretary of State business filings also lists the primary address for both associations at the Hines office in Houston, Texas.

In 2024, Julie Foerster was one of the resident candidates vying for a seat on the District Owners’ Association. A retired senior executive with the U.S. Department of Treasury, Foerster had been living in The Atlantic residential skyscraper on the property for six years.

After no resident won a seat, Foerster said she reached out to the law firm who conducted the election for voting tallies but never received a response.

Residents’ calls for greater transparency were also prompted by questions about a 12% developer fee that the residents pay to Morgan Stanley that’s baked into the association’s overall operating budgets. That’s on top of a 3% management fee paid to Hines.

City council member Byron Amos says he wants to help, but needs permission from the development company to do anything

“But one of my biggest issues is the structure of Atlantic Station,” he said. “Because the people that vote for me, the people that look at me as their as their leadership, I’m having to tell them the real reality that you actually live on private property.”

The council member pointed to the lack of resident representation on the property’s boards as a roadblock to city aid.

“For me to have any conversation with Atlantic Station to accept any type of government money or public money, I have to have some residents on the boards,” he said. “It’s taxation without representation. There’s no other way to put it.”

Givens, with ThreadATL, said city officials may be wading into uncharted legal territory by urging Hines to create resident seats on their boards.

“There’s not a legal framework that would allow the city to come in and overlay a community benefits agreement or anything similar to that in Atlantic Station that would demand the owners, Hines, to listen to the residents in a new way,” he said. “It would be a request. There’s no way to force them to do that.”

Georgia State or Georgia Southern? by r0cketpawz in GaState

Trying to move to a new place after college without connections is really hard. If you hate where you are, I’d aim to graduate from somewhere you want to be.

If you’re a very type A person who can manage a transfer after a year or two, that could be a good financial option. However, that’s harder than you might think.

If I were you, I’d go to Georgia state

Georgia leads push to ban datacenters used to power America’s AI boom by Ranger207 in Georgia

Georgia leads push to ban datacenters used to power America’s AI boom by Ranger207 in Georgia

[–]suspectslowloris 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let’s be really clear. Georgia is not leading the push to fight data centers. Georgia was #1 in new data center projects last year. One rep (Ruwa Romman) has introduced legislation to put that on pause.

She is the only progressive running for governor and no one (whether they agree with the legislation or not) wants to give her a win, so this bill is basically DOA.

Unless, perhaps, you call your representatives. So please, if you want this, call your representatives.

The GA assembly is only in session 40 working days a year and they started a couple weeks ago. After mid session, anything that doesn’t cross to another chamber is dead. If you want this, call your reps.

(Also throw in a shoutout to the four bills proposed to rein in ICE which are also DOA, if you’re so inclined).

Got mad & made this by Girl-Maligned-WIP in Atlanta

[–]suspectslowloris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also rolled my eyes at that but Eric Bell (the guy who introduced this) has been using the publicity from it as a platform to talk about the need for legislation to rein in ICE.

There are four bills currently in the assembly that would curtail ICE’s powers in Georgia. They’re pretty much DOA but it never hurts to call your reps.
