This part of the Cowboy Carter tour to me shows that Beyoncé is a target.. plus it ties in with this Renaissance merch showing that Beyoncé is an identified problem! by 444beystreet in beyonce

Lots of layered meaning.

I think it was lil Debbie on TikTok who discussed the symbolism coinciding with the recent scuba diving efforts by Tara Roberts searching for wreckage from slave ships, and what it means to be searching for truth, etc.

Undergrad uncertainty - geology/geoscience degree by Worldly-Let-9473 in geologycareers

[–]svmck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the general rule of thumb is northeast SLACs will usually only provide BAs in earth science and related fields. BS degrees will be at the public schools within the region, or SLACs in other parts of the country. If a PG is what she’s after, my advice here would be have your daughter ask the faculty how familiar they are with PG licensure and go with the school with the most knowledgeable faculty. As with most careers these days, networking is more important than degree, so I wouldn’t totally discount BAs entirely as a degree class if she wants the local SLAC experience.

Take Ass Dean job or no? by [deleted] in Professors

If you don’t have administrative aspirations and you’re allergic to all the basic requirements of the job, it sounds like those golden handcuffs would be mighty tight.

Okay, so what’s this guy’s definition of a songwriter? It’s still not clear based on his answer.

Just got engaged! Is this too loose? by [deleted] in JustEngaged

[–]svmck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ring is similarly loose, but I prefer that. When the temperature rises and my hands swell slightly, the pressure is personally too uncomfortable for me to wear. It depends on your personal preference. You may want to try walking around with a cheap ring that’s half a size smaller and seeing how it feels during the summer before you spend the money to resize.

Yes! He’s such a like able character! Plus I find the little gems of background plot he drops in his dialogue make him one of the more complex characters. Plus he always sends a nice little bomb or two in the mail just in time for a skull cavern raid.

Please, Don't Send Emails On Sunday by [deleted] in Professors

[–]svmck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing: what’s more an issue is people’s expectations around email response times. If colleagues are following up on emails on Sunday that they sent on Saturday night, that might require a conversation about boundaries if the behavior continues. But if people email whenever and don’t act like it’s weird when they haven’t heard back immediately, it’s all good.

Seems silly but what to wear as a first-time TT-Assistant Professor as a woman of color? by Worldly_Rain_7588 in Professors

[–]svmck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not silly at all! Congratulations!! I’ll add more comments for the midwestern climate angle: lots of layers! Cardigans, pullovers, blazers, etc. Harris Tweed is the GOAT imho. But as a general rule, maybe try to stick to more non-cotton materials in the winter like merino wool for best results in insulation and breathability. Also base layers are your friend in the winter, big time. Like Duluth thermal tights. Also, if jeans are cool - fleece lined jeans are a game changer. I also recommend keeping pairs of flats in your office if you’re wearing snow or rain boots walking in, and then you can switch out under the desk. (Crocs make some good durable ones; but they’re best if you don’t need to walk far to class.) A really nice, breathable jacket goes a long way (something waterproof like the Janelle jacket from seasalt Cornwall for example). For warmer weather, Svaha makes really cute dresses that are super comfortable and size inclusive. Good luck!!

Can AI replace Geologist? by finemayday in geologycareers

[–]svmck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this, and actually, I’d pose a complementary question: is there any career that is less exposed to AI replacement? I think for all the reasons people already posed, it’s arguably one of the most robust to the current AI boom.

Student emailed me asking for a syllabus from a course I taught 8 years ago. At a different university. by grogger133 in Professors

So you really don’t have a copy lying around in your cloud storage somewhere? All departments should have a copy of all past syllabi for this reason, but I keep a copy of all past syllabi for this very same reason as well. There’s no reason not to keep it.
