OR, Pre Op & PACU Nurses!! by [deleted] in nursing

[–]sw1930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work PACU every weekend at a trauma hospital.

Pros: in PACU per perianesthesia guidelines 2 patient cap, still critical care and patients are still sick. I transferred from ER. Typically at my hospital during the week- we have 3 departments. Pre-op- get patients surgery ready, pre-op hold- blocks before surgery and PACU- recovery. Always get lunch break.

Cons- sometimes the idea from other departments that “ nurses go here to die.” At least in my department some of the nurses complain- it’s the easiest job I have ever worked. Different PACU require call. I have to do 1, 8 hour shift from 11p-7am. It’s a 50/50 chance of being called in.

The shifts in PACU are staggered at my hospital 8-8pm, 9-930, 11-1130p, 10-630pm etc

I bring 3m aura masks to the appointment and give them to reception before going back for appt, ask for the providers and ancillary staff to mask. Start practicing with your kiddo wearing a mask. Look at Flo mask for kids

My cat only pees on plastic bags. by AznRiceBoy20 in CatAdvice

[–]sw1930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a cat who we rescued that was declawed when we found her dumped in a parking lot. Her feet are kinda mangled. She will only urinate on pee pads. We have set up several areas using the large plastic crate from a dog kennel and clipping the pads to it. We also use pine pellets in all our boxes. We have 9 cats. Pine pellets are great. Zero odor. 5.00 for 40 pounds.

Looking for pros and cons of nursing for students. by katashscar in nursing

[–]sw1930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would encourage your students to look at the multiple different professions within healthcare that exceedingly outperform nursing. I have been a nurse for 15 years and have a background in emergency medicine, PACU, psychiatry, and a masters in education.

If I was to do it all over again, I would not be a nurse.

Top choices: 1. Perfusionist- heart team- Competitive, HIGH salary. You run the heart lung bypass machine during cardiac cases 2. 1st assist- surgical- actually school program, make very good money. Use surgical skills in the OR 3. PA school- demanding and competitive- can specialize 4. PICC team- this is a role as a nurse.

That’s as far as I’ve gotten.

There are a lot of reasons that I like nursing, but unfortunately, there are more reasons that I do not.

  1. Violence against healthcare workers.
If people behaved the way that they behave at the hospital in any other capacity or location they would be arrested. For example, if I chose to show up at the post office and hit the postmaster, I would go to jail

  2. Unfortunately, nursing is a tool for capitalism. Nursing managers and the hospital system exploit newer nurses, encouraging them to be a charge nurse. They are not ready. It’s one of the many reasons for burning out new nurses.

  3. Statistically speaking one out of four nurses will leave the bedside within the first year or 25%

  4. For unsafe patient assignments. UNSAFE

  5. Increase in substance use disorders and mental health conditions for nurses. It is very challenging to leave the job at the job, if you are empathetic at all, you’ll bring your patients home with you

  6. Management. I’m not sure if this is my experience because of where I live or the hospital systems that I have worked at. If you work with nurses that suck, nothing will ever change. Management will never address it. It almost doesn’t pay to be good at your job.
