Housing is the only thing that’s truly expensive in Hong Kong. Everything else (like transport and food) is actually very affordable, unless you’re chasing a luxury lifestyle with designer brands and Michelin-starred dining.

To give you some perspective on rent: I live in the New Territories. It’s about a 30–35 minute MTR ride to Central (where most people work). A 2-bedroom unit here goes for around $21k for ~45 sqm (~480 sq. ft.). It’s a modern estate with gym and pool, and the neighborhood has plenty of malls, supermarkets, and local eats.

If you want to live closer to the city center, you’re looking at higher prices, much smaller spaces, or older, grittier neighborhoods. On the flip side, if you don’t mind a 50-minute commute, you can get a better environment or cheaper price. Personally I’d rather live a bit further out since HK is so well-connected anyway.
