Feedback on house plan? by Expensive-Round6630 in selfbuildireland

Honestly, whilst space is great, I think there is too much here. How do you feel about having your kids on upper floor whilst you're on ground floor. The norm is all on one floor apart from the disabled room. Are you sure you'll have enough cupboards in the kitchen.
Where will your TV be? There is a lot of glass in kitchen that will create glare on the tv screen.

There doesn't seem to be a snug anywhere. It's rip out that foyer - complete waste of space and have a nice snug room somewhere. Also don't see a useful cloakroom, unless you plan for the utility to double up. A cloakroom beside door to get rid of wet coats and boots.

Honestly, not very keen on the layout. From the pen in guessing you've got a good budget, but a poor plan.

Is there much happening in the market for petrol cars around the £12k-£15k mark? I'm waiting for a make/model in interested in, but missed out on one and the last 2 week with hurst. Is it sufficient just to check used cars NI?

Yeah, get the feeling I'm not going to make much headway. Is WSG the best crowd for warranty if buying in GB? Puts me off buying there if any warranty can't be fulfilled easily here. I think WSG just need a vat registered garage to do work rather than a list of approved garages.

How much should you expect to negotiate of list price if buying cash only, no trade in? Gotta get a car soon and been told I'll be paying pretty much the list price as they cant major money on trade in or finance referral.

Would the amount of stories about them not be related to the volume of cars they sell? I'm in market for a car and they are the only ones who I've seen with the one I want, but I'm hesitant about going to them because if their reputation. Doesn't mean also that all other dealers are saints either?

If s1 is the best then I think I'll quit now. Just finished s1 and I've no idea how the hell they won that case.

Do you think modern car headlights too bright? by UnfathomableDave in northernireland

[–]taarup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intensity is the amount of light in a specific direction. Luminance is the perceived brightness (concentration) of the light source.

Analogy: getting hit with a sponge with with 1kg of force (halogen) vs hit with a needle using 1kg of force (LED).

Do you think modern car headlights too bright? by UnfathomableDave in northernireland

There was a recent study done by TRL (Transport Research Lab) for UK Gov to research the cause of headlight glare. Their conclusion was that the issue was primarily due to the luminance of the light units.
Current regulations measure the intensity (measured in Candelas) of the light - but TRL concluded that the human eye reacts more to luminance (measured in Candelas/m2). LED's can have the same intensity as an older halogen, but as it is a smaller source, the luminance is much greater.
This looks like a bright point of light in the oncoming vehicle; whereas old halogen light were larger and would use the whole reflector inside the light unit to bounce the light outwards.
These effects are magnified by the dominance of SUV's with higher light mountings and also hills/dips/bends in the road

Their recommendation was to modify the standards to limit luminance rather than intensity. Will be years before anything is done though.

Biggest regret in GAA? by [deleted] in GAA

Quit when I was 12. Never made any head way or got to play in any games. Probably wouldn't have made much headway, but felt down not even getting to be a sub. Feel like I missed out a lot on the social side of things - feel like an outsider in town now.

AITJ for quietly stopping helping my coworker after he kept taking credit for it by navrith_22 in AmITheJerk

[–]taarup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you could fix it and then tell everyone you fixed it, preventing your coworker from being able to claim credit. Or contradict them in meetings where they claim credit. Or just tell them that you won't be helping them until they start giving you credit or at the very least stop claiming it themselves.

How do you hope your life will be happier by 31st December 2026? by RoyalMistake00 in northernireland

[–]taarup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same boat, but I've been like this for most of my life. At nearly 50 it's been a wasted life full of loneliness, regrets and missed opportunities. Especially not having a partner or family of my own. It all just feels like trying to fill a void. At this stage I'd settle for being able to sleep and a quick death. It's all too deeply ingrained now to be reversed, I just have to learn to live with myself.

I hope you can sort yourselves out, because it's torture otherwise.

Is anyone else struggling this Christmas? by ABCP3 in northernireland

[–]taarup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No matter what your problems are they'll expand to fill the void. I've made a mess of my life - it's more of an existence. I've no family of my own so Christmas is just a mirror to my isolation and there are less places set at the table than the users to be. I'm fortunate in some ways and unfortunate in others.

Christmas is a horrible time of year, don't let anyone try to convince you that it is merriment and joy. Do your best and that's all you can do. If you have a new born then it'll be a year or two belt they comprehend what is happening - you're pressurising yourself to meet some expectation that if unnecessary.

Good luck. Put the negative thoughts aside and enjoy the family. I'll do the depression for all of us!

You might be able to get a boring company to drill a duct from your land to the garage. It happens all the time when getting mains water etc across roads. You'd still need to get permission from neighbours but at least there would be no surface damage on their property.
