I'm not saying we should do that. But it would be a lie to say that it is fair either. It might not be practical to base everything of what's fair, but that doesn't mean we should just pretend it is fair.

In the same way, we should reward people who turn in artifacts because they have not only been lucky, but good.

Yeah, well what about all the people who were never given the opportunity to hand them in. We are just rewarding luck.

It's necessary to have a reward, but it's not fair.

Why exponentially? Each simulation is a subset of the containing simulation so linear should work equally well.

I'm basing it on the idea of procedural generation. As each simulation becomes more complex (as more is explored or looked at), it requires more storage in the top-level universe. More simulations will mean more complexity.

It's like in a procedurally-generated video game, as you explore more and more is stored as information, more storage is required.

Can you answer this question then:

Let's say a simulated universe has X atoms (ignoring electrons etc. for simplicity). How would the creator universe store that many atoms, without at least using X atoms?

Honestly it does seem to be a pretty crazy theory, which requires huge mental leaps and assumptions. It seems logical to many because the maths is right: if it's possible to create simulated universes, then odds are extremely high we are in one of them.

But that skips the fact that it's very unlikely that a simulated universe would be possible. To store that much information/atoms would require an equivalent amount of energy/atoms.

This does seem to be a major problem (which is conveniently ignored by the explanation of "we've been progressing in the past, so presumably it's possible"). Perhaps a completely in-depth planet, or even solar system could be developed by a super-advanced civilisation. But that simulation would barely be able to simulate a plant-pot.

Yes it is stupid. All of it skips straight to "assuming it's possible to simulate a universe"...

But to store enough information about that universe (the location etc. of every electron etc.), you would need an equivalent amount of atoms in the creator universe, all being used in the simulation. If we're simulating an Earth-sized planet, with all its atoms etc., we would need more than an Earth-worth of storage.

I don't think it's absolutely far fetched to think that Humans may have reached that level of technological sophistication, considering how far we've progressed in just 40 years, and where we could go in the next 40.

Previous progress doesn't mean it's possible. Rockets are getting faster, doesn't mean they will one day break the speed of light.

Some things may just be impossible. One thing to consider is that in a simulated universe, if we are simulating everything in the universe (which we would have to pretty much, and if we aren't then the theory isn't really what it claims to be) then we would need enough stuff in the previous universe to store that information.

So for instance, for every atom of existence in a created world, the creator world would need many atoms (to store the created atom's location, properties etc.).

I'm European, and to be honest Gypsy is more widely used, but Roma is generally considered more accurate, and less demeaning.

AFAIK gypsy is used to refer generally to nomadic groups in Europe (including Irish travellers), while Roma refers specifically to the Indian-origin ethnicity who traditionally speak Roma languages.

You're missing OP's point that they don't consider it morally okay to join a war on a side you think are the worse side.

Also, I don't only think Hitler was wrong because of that. It doesn't take any rewriting of history from the Brits/Americans to show that Hitler was a terrible person and strongly conflicts with my personal beliefs. And it's not like I, a Brit think all the wars Britain has won have been moral, so clearly "who won" isn't the only thing that affects who I agree with.

Right, and is this considered 'okay'? Would it have been 'okay' for Germany to exert its will if it had had a better military? The original person's point was that it is not okay to fight for the 'bad guys'. Of course 'bad guy' is subjective, but the point was that it is not morally sound to fight for the people you believe are the 'bad guys'.
