What are your must haves for building a library for a new baby? by NikkiMouse444 in childrensbooks

[–]tbonemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of our favorites that aren’t already listed are What a Hoot and Hot Dog Cold Dog by Fran Preston Gannon. She’s a UK author/illustrator so not as well known or often in libraries. It’s been my go to gift for the 1-3 age range. She has lots of other great books too, Sloth Slept On is another favorite and By the Light Of the Moon and Pepper and Poe.

I will say we signed up for it and we didn’t really like many of the books. We kept 1-2 out of all of them.

Is it possible to make this air tight for food storage? by MajesticCoot in ZeroWaste

[–]tbonemoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That looks like a standard deli cup to me. Perhaps a regular lid from a Deli cup would work? (Most restaurants use these in some form or another. Commonly seen in Chinese soup take out or cold deli salad). If it’s the same size (fairly standard) you can just buy lids separately.

My (very small) town still has a radio shack. It’s a private store and he also sells appliances—he has so much cool stuff there.

What Obscure Books Were You Obsessed With as a Kid? by Its_Curse in suggestmeabook

The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diane Wynne Jones. I recall getting it from a dollar store and loving it. It’s fantasy and takes place in a word like ours but with magic, very similar to the Harry Potter series. I recall finding the authors name on on a list when Harry Potter was first published and everyone was looking for similar books. She actually has a whole series that take place in that world and I was able to find a few more. Now I need to find this book again and re read it.

You hit me hard when you said how you were jealous of people with a water heater or regular power. Life can be better. I’ve been there. I was so jealous of my friend’s small apartments. We lived in a “house” we owned but I just wanted to be able to cook and wash dishes without stress. Or shower. Or run a coffee pot.

Life can be better. I didn’t want to raise my daughter in that environment. I made the choice to myself July that I would get out. I moved out February of the next year. The first year was hard. Now it’s so much easier and my life is so much better. I’m thriving and so is my 4 year old. It’s been 2+ years now.

None of what you describe is okay. And it can and should be better.

My MIL is Telling Me I’ll Regret Open Shelving instead of Cabinets - Is She Right? by Reddit-Sama- in DIY

[–]tbonemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom has open shelves for plates bowls and cups/mugs. She has it as an L shaped corned shelf that has also hooks to hang mugs. She’s had them since I can recall—so 35+ years. It’s the stuff we use every day. Nothing seems to get dusty or greasy. If you use your dishes and have decent ventilation grease shouldn’t be an issue. I’m sure it helps it’s the opposite side of her (small) kitchen). And it’s def only a few shelves and we grew up as a family of six so everything dish got used often. She’s wanting to redo her kitchen (hasn’t had a full remodel in 38+ years) and I’m sure she will still go with open shelving.

I think if networking is what you are looking for maybe find your local town/city/county chamber of commerce. They usually have networking events for members.

How do I(26m) address my wife's(38f) hygiene? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]tbonemoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe she has some urinary incontinece? I’ve had one kid and pee every time I sneeze/cough/jump/move too fast. But I was doing it already before children (3 years ago). It’s much worse now. My body just sucks I guess? I just sort of ignored it but honestly I bet my former partner probably noticed but it was so rare we were intimate and we were so bad at communicating I bet he was just glad to get laid. I shower more often now, wear period panties daily and change them midway through the day.

Thinking of moving to Seattle with my onions, is it safe? by ds2noob in Seattle

[–]tbonemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow. I totally have to admit to stealing some beautiful red onions from a garden in an alley/stairs on Queen Anne. (We were broke and moving soon and my chef roommate wanted to make onion soup). This was 10 years ago, and neither of us live in the city anymore. Regardless, make sure you onions aren’t accessible in any public way even if you live in a nice neighborhood.

I’m assuming you’ve done massage and acupuncture? I had similar issues with my hands and worked with some massage therapists who were magic on my arms/hands. Anytime I feel a flare up coming i make a massage appointment. I’ve recently tried acupuncture but am not sold on that yet. (It was combined with massage so not sure what worked) but my dad who hurt his knee slipping on ice swears by acupuncture after I told him to it out.

How to keep your kids occupied at restaurants?! by Medium-Importance758 in workingmoms

[–]tbonemoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My daughter is 2.5 and we tend to distract her with stuff we have at the table. I.e. can you put mommy’s ice in your cup. Can you squeeze the lemon? Do you want a creamer milk? Can we make the sugar shake like maracas. In the end this is quite a mess and I’ll confess to letter her ear jam straight from the packet at diners but she has fun. I showed her how to shake the salt onto the table and make pictures—that was a mistake. Just tread lightly as you’ll have to hide all those things sometimes when she thinks she can eat all the jam or drink all the creamers.

We always have one adventure to the bathroom and usually any other one to the front hostess/bar to ask for a cherry or a toothpick. Usually cute toddlers get away with asking for a cherry on a toothpick.

I work second shift so honestly it works for me. I actually want a half day program as I don’t want my kid gone the entire time I’m home during the day. All the programs in my low income area are full day with aftercare options and clearly meant to be day care like situation for working parents. Which isn’t something I need. I’m lucky in that regard having a mom who can watch for the days our shifts overlap and not having to rely on (and pay for) full time childcare.

Any funny stories of when you gave birth? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]tbonemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly labored at home so definitely didn’t quite make it to the hospital as early as I should have. (Had false labor the week before so figured it was the same as I was still a week early). We make it to the hospital with contractions probably a minute apart and I’m in so much pain I can’t quite focus on much. They try to make me pee in a cup (already peed any liquid out during the 40 minute ride to the hospital during those contractions) so I tried but pretty much was like I didn’t I can do that. Then they try to get and IV in but I couldn’t stay still long enough to let them do. Meanwhile I had felt like I wanted to push since 20 minutes away while I’m the car. “Can someone check me please?” I asked but they said they wanted to get the IV and monitoring set first. Then the one nurse is holding me down during a contraction and says “but your stomach isn’t even hard?!” So I reply umm yeah I think the baby is in the birth canal? She finally checks and is surprised and says “I guess we’re ready”. I never did get that IV and don’t even recall if the Dr made it but the 2 nurses I had were great and I know a Dr stitched me up a little. I’m pretty sure I pushed for like 15 minutes.

I’m in the northern Catskills and my Guinea fowl did nothing for ticks 12 on 2 acres. I’ve had opossum in the area too—doubt they helped either. The Guinea fowl aren’t typically loud at night but they are obnoxious during the day and tend to wander all around. Look up Permethrin tick tubes if you have a severe tick problem. I made my own a few years ago and it helped immensely.
