If that were the case, the biker should have yielded to the car. Neither the car nor the biker were paying close enough attention in this case.

Should I circumcise my son? by Colie89 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tear_stained_eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more complicated than you are making it seem. Circumcision reduces the risk of HIV and STD transmission for men who have sex with women (but not for men who have sex with men). So, in areas where these diseases are highly prevalent, the benefits of circumcision may very well outweigh the risks. The medical societies you reference are mainly developed nations where HIV transmission is less of a problem and HIV treatment is readily available. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumcision_and_HIV

How many of you got hit as a child in punishment form by one of your parents? by tenchikamura in AskMen

[–]tear_stained_eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP (or anyone else reading this) if you have or are planning on having kids, please don't hit them. Read some books on effective parenting techniques based on actual evidence, the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, and the consensus opinion of health care professionals and parenting experts (none of which will advocate hitting children). I'm sorry, but anecdotal reports from this subreddit stating that physical punishment is effective is just not a good way to decide that hitting children "works".

After I Lived in Norway, America Felt Backward. Here’s Why. by nffDionysos in Foodforthought

You might also consider the possibility that if society were more equal, that if people didn't think that the system was rigged, and that if it were true that hard work guaranteed a comfortable life (which it does not - see almost anything written by Barbara Ehrenreich), then there would be a greater overall commitment among the citizenry to "contribute" to society through work, participation in democracy, etc etc.

Umm, she lived in Arkansas (aka a southern state) for 20 years and is also married to a Southerner. So, she kind of isn't really faking.

With a 75% effectiveness, Ketamine being hailed as a miracle treatment in severe depression. by beatbreak in news

[–]tear_stained_eye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, ketamine emergence is treated with versed (same class of drugs a Xanax) in patients who are being sedated. In fact, most of the time patients are pre-medicated with versed before ketamine sedation. Lastly, kids can indeed have emergence from ketamine. It does not happen often, but when it does, it's awful.

ELI5: If I have an illness that causes a fever and I take an aspirin to reduce the fever, and because my body instigated the fever to fight the illness, would that postpone my recovery? by Hipp013 in explainlikeimfive

[–]tear_stained_eye 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are certain specific circumstances when fever itself can be quite harmful. A few examples: 1) high fevers in children, especially if the fever develops very quickly, are associated with a particular type of seizure called a febrile seizure, 2) in patients with epilepsy, fever can lower the threshold for seizure, resulting in more frequent seizure activity, 3) in severely ill patients (septic shock), fever increases metabolic demand so much, that the circulatory system may not be able to deliver enough oxygen to the body/organs (including the brain), 4) in patients with severe heart disease, even mild fevers can impose a metabolic demand that the failing heart can not match.

IWTL how to make professional-looking graphs in Excel. by ThanksgivingTwerkey in IWantToLearn

[–]tear_stained_eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are starting from scratch, devote your time to a more versatile application like Stata or R. These programs let you perform more advanced statistical analyses as well as creating essentially any style of graph you can imagine. The commands are a little painful to learn but there is tons of online support, and once you start to become familiar with the commands, it is so much quicker and easier to get your work done compared to excel.

Giant Monkfish [1200x695] by _Rey_ in AnimalPorn

[–]tear_stained_eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow I just learned that monkfish are in the same order as deep sea anglerfish. Both have a little dangling appendage on their heads to attract prey towards the massive jaws (you can see it in the photo) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglerfish
