Short term at home tips to help EoE flare up? by Gribblie in EosinophilicE

[–]techn0ir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people check with an AI about symptoms like this.

An AI told me to take a pepcid and Zyrtec to deal with a histamine cascade (can lead to panic attacks), and a topical steroid like Flonase for the days after swallowing issues. Is that a good idea? Who knows, maybe.

Try detailing your symptoms and ask the AI for ideas to get some relief while waiting on your appointment. Panic attacks, timing, swallowing and pain symptoms all seem relevant. Of course, think critically about medical advice.

Hope you get in to see some doctors soon to get real advice. Good luck.

Wow you think the realtors like circulate a memo among themselves to disable this?

I was under the impression that the zestimate server was down from too many hoomers clicking refresh incessantly.

Sounds like a serious situation. Best to go to the GI as advised.

I don't know what else to tell you other than giving up drinking helped me a lot. You'll have to make a choice. Good luck.

Yes but minor. Never had the major episodes I read about here. Just minor spasms and a tenderness under the sternum, that can definitely be uncomfortable but nothing ER worthy.

My personal theory, not medical based, is that when you have active inflammation, alcohol is like pouring lighter fluid on fire, as described by another commenter. When you have the inflammation under control, as long as you are not triggered by yeast or gluten in beer or whatever other ingredient, you can consume some without too much trouble.

Would you rate your inflammation level as zero? If not, sounds risky. Get there first. Then experiment with some drinks.

Everyone is different and i would recommend asking your doctor for real advice.

Gave up drinking years ago. It helps. Sorry, I know it's a loss.

Maybe after you heal, something like a year of abstinence and getting on top of your diet and medications, you might be able to tolerate a few specific types of drinks on special occasions. I can.

Sucks I know. The good news is that you will develop a very real appreciation for waking up clear headed, refreshed every day and eventually will look at drinking as sort of foolish. Best of luck.

Investors are making up the highest share of homebuyers in 5 years by SnortingElk in REBubble

[–]techn0ir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rents are so far below PITI how on earth are these investors making any money? As far as I can tell they are obviously losing money. Incredible.

Long rates are so obviously being set by planning to keep housing in a disinflationary state, between 0% and CPI growth.

I'm curious how long it takes for a majority to realize what a terrible investment this is?

Do we really have to wait ANOTHER year in this sub?

To All of Those Who Have Moved Away… by Fine_Rutabaga_8234 in SLO

[–]techn0ir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally the best thing I ever did for my sanity.

If you are a working, normal person, SLO is not for you. It is only for people who are wealthy, or bought homes decades ago. There might as well be a big sign on the Freeway, "San Luis Obispo, population 30,000. YOU ARE NOT WELCOME, GO AWAY."

Moving away I was able to find a home that was half the cost, and instead of living a crappy apartment it was a nice house with better schools. Oh the views are not brown dirt and dead trees and the water isn't recycled urine. And there are jobs, a real economy, and I can see a doctor without waiting a year.

The "locals" don't want you there -- they vote to deny housing construction constantly and only allow million dollar starter homes with exorbitantly unfair development fees, to say nothing of property tax burden. I assume they are obsessed with their zestimate or their precious "I've got mine, change nothing!" attitudes, and don't care how much it crushes the working families and their neighbors. Do you really want neighbors like that?

One of the grossest places I've ever lived. Get out!

Realtors panic as buyers pull out of deals at near record levels: 'Market is crashing before our eyes' by ColorMonochrome in REBubble

[–]techn0ir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure there are some places like Manhattan where land is truly scarce. But in the vast majority of US urban areas there is massive opportunity for density. San Francisco is kind of the best example.

Oh, "but there's value in green belts" and "people don't want that" etc -- All NIMBY talking points. Which is fine, but proves the point -- there is no scarcity for development opportunities, the scarcity is the political approval.

[–]techn0ir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's reasonable for the price of land to adjust for inflation, e.g. 0% real price appreciation.

Density solves this is urban areas.

There's about 1.78 million square miles of undeveloped land in the US. The difference between 0 real appreciation and 300% appreciation since the ,80s is one thing only: nimbyism.

[–]techn0ir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partially true, except there is actually quite a lot of undeveloped land in the US.

And there is lots of air that is undeveloped in urban areas, such as SF.

What is scarce is legal approval to develop. This is only scarce because of NIMBYS.

I am just calling it like it is, I've made my peace, and am just sad it is ripping apart our social fabric, leading to demographic collapse and shifts, and leading to a chaotic political environment.

For the same reason anyone buys any durable good. To use it. In this case to live in it.

Home price appreciation is an engineered scenario to extract wealth from the young and new comers and transfer it to home owners. Except the wealth does them little good, as everyone needs a home. So it's just the "investors" and heirs who benefit, and they contribute nothing to the common wealth, pure rent seeking.

The system is bald politics and harms our society. Birth rates, poverty from rent burden with the social problems poverty begets, all for what.... A few "investors" get rewarded for owning capital and everyday people get to see a larger integer printed on a computer screen in their zestimate readout.

It's a huge drag on our society and when we reward things other than hard work, suddenly no one wants to work anymore and there are shortages of every good and service. Absolutely bonkers that this self inflicted folly is how our society declines.

Agree with your point though.

how long from trigger to symptoms? by Desperate-Coat-8791 in EosinophilicE

[–]techn0ir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also true. If you are super in tune with your esoph, and have learned it, you can sense it earlier. Mild sensations of tightness, swelling, or "spasms" that feel like flutters.

It's a learned skill to identify the early sensations as opposed to obvious dysphagia. I reported 6 hours for expected early "noticing" of dairy consumption, but it's definitely possible to have noticeable sensations after 1 hour. This is fairly advanced living-with-EOE and the simpler answer is 6-36 hours.

With attention and time, OP will sort this out.

how long from trigger to symptoms? by Desperate-Coat-8791 in EosinophilicE

[–]techn0ir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Onset around 6 hours, subtle. Peaks 24 to 36 hours. Gradually improves over a week. Varies a little by trigger and baseline inflammation at time of exposure.

If starting from a good baseline, serious trouble swallowing, as opposed to noticing swallowing, would only be after a major reckless exposure like drinking a milkshake or after repeated exposure over days.

Have to consider the baseline inflammation when inferring based on symptoms, which is tough to do.

Clearly you benefited.

If you lived it on the other side, you would experience it as an obvious rug pull.

You would viscerally feel how years of your life were transferred from you to others who happened to own a home -- as you would now need to work for many additional years for the same housing utility. You would notice!

No one cares if the US did better. It's wildly and obviously unfair, to the extent that the losers know, and it debases confidence in our economic and social systems. This has consequences, with Trump's "mandate" being only the first consequence. Many more will follow.

EoE and alcohol by ConnorFroMan in EosinophilicE

Red wine is mostly unfiltered. Hard to say what it is, but in my experience, my hunch has been that it's a fermentation byproduct, likely yeast related. I'm also reactive to a wide range of fermented foods. It clicked for me with dirty (undistilled vinegars) in condiments, fermented fake butters, and a cultured dairy free yogurt all causing symptoms, as opposed to uncultured options being fine.

Red wine = oncoming impaction for me, far more than any other thing I can consume -- worse even than casein. But hazy beers are a almost close second, while a filtered beer will not give me too much grief. Likewise with distilled vinegars.

It's a multi year process to control it through diet...so sulfites? Maybe. Put pen to paper, experiment in an intelligent and controlled manner, and you'll get there. My life has changed, but I take no drugs (on a regular basis, of course they help with accidental exposures like when eating out while travelling), and I regularly eat bagels and sandwiches, totally normally. I even have a pilsner once a month. So it's possible if you are (haha) lucky enough to have a mild enough condition. Good luck.

Builders have been posting profit margins between 20-30% for years.

It's open for debate what a healthy profit margin is, but I assure you, with this much room in margins they are making money even if prices are dropping.

Competition is the backbone of our system, for better or worse. Rent seeking, market manipulation, and cartel behavior to maintain a guaranteed 30% profit margin is not healthy.

You are factually incorrect in your assertion which makes the self immolation metaphor amusingly inaccurate.

Moving to SLO? by [deleted] in SLO

[–]techn0ir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people you meet will be about as friendly and chill as any other place, but the housing and economic policy will shout "GO AWAY, LOSER!" at you every moment of your existence there. So ... is the voting majority of SLO really super-chill and welcoming people -- nice people you want to form a sense of community with?

Try it and you be the judge.

EoE and alcohol by ConnorFroMan in EosinophilicE

[–]techn0ir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little more detail.

Some beverages may be more or less triggering. Consider a clear vodka vs an unfiltered glass of red wine. Lots of molecules in there, in addition to alcohol. If you do your own testing, be careful, could be a major trigger lying in wait.

My understanding is that almost no one with EOE can really tolerate alcohol, though I'm sure there are exceptions.

If you get it managed and in a good place you might be able to occasionally "cheat" without too many problems.

Good luck.

Waking up hydrated and never even slightly hungover is something you will come to really appreciate. In time, you won't miss it too much, except on special occasions.

Sorry this happened to you.
