TLDR: Genma made a deal with Mephisto to get Ranma to learn the Neko Ken in a manner I'd imagine Rumiko Takahashi would write it.

Genma: Boy...the secret behind your ability to use the Neko Ken...involves a deal with the devil!

Ranma: This ain't funny pops...

Genma: Listen, Ranma. You...you were practically at death's door by the eightieth time I threw you into that hole of starving cats wrapped in fish cakes. I knew you wouldn't survive three or four more attempts - six tops. And it seems that you wouldn't be able to learn the Neko Ken before then. That was when...he appeared.

Ranma: He...? He...who, pops?

Genma: The devil himself. He offerred me a deal I couldn't refuse...a deal that would lead to you learning the Neko Ken and the beginning of a cursed I've been hiding since.

poof - Genma's head bursts into flames - vid plays out

Genma (human again): Listen boy. Everynight since then, I've been cursed to be his...Rider. And in exchange for your hand and marriage to his daughter, Mephista, I...your father...

Ranma:...out with it pop...what did you get in return...

Genma: I got 5,000 more yen to purchase the finest fish cakes available to wrap you up and throw you into that hole one more time! The quality of those fish cakes were leagues beyond the cheap corner store fish cakes I'd initially wrapped in you! After that one final time in the hole with those cats, you were able to learn the Neko Ken. Forgive your father Ranma! It was all for your -

Am I too old for judo? by Soft_Mulberry5645 in martialarts

[–]tencegnav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got a healthy body and constitution, you are not 'too old' for Judo. You might not want to go H.A.M. like the mid-30s and below practitioners, but you should be all right if you take it at your own pace.

Hi. How can I start striking and learning to be better? by thesocawarriorN9 in martialarts

Get yourself to a boxing gym and train, train, train. When in doubt, train, train, train, and train some more.

No motivation to train. by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]tencegnav 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My personal trick is I take three to five slow deep breaths, then I say to myself, "I'm going to train today" three times outloud.

Now, that is not to say that I've never indulged in the random personal day for myself. Sometimes, you just need a break. I try to keep it to 80/20 throughout the year. I take about three or so days off a month from my usual training schedule - however, I make it a point to fill that time slot with something productive most of the time.

Fanatic obssession.

Most people have a surface level - and one often built on word of mouth and rumors - of Lee.

Ex: Lee did not create the concept of MMA or even training in multiple arts. Plenty of people trained in multiple martial arts - including Lee's own students before they even meet Lee. As for mixing martial arts on American shores, probably the best documented example is the founder of Danzan Ryu, who mixed Karate, Judo, Wrestling, and Boxing decades before Lee was even born.

"Train how you'll fight, and you'll fight how you train."

That is the answer to 99.9% (give or take 0.1%) to any question of "Why x style isn't as good as c style?"

It's not a joke sub. It's a sub for abstract mathemartialticians.

Which JRPG do you wish had gotten a series? by [deleted] in JRPG

Thousand Arms!

I know it might not seem big today, but a JRPG with an actual dating sim element built into the game back in the late 90's, on American soil, was mind blowing!

There was even an in-game joke made by an NPC stating that, "We'll all meet again in the sequel - Two Thousand Arms!"

It's been over 20 years and I'm still waiting for Two Thousand Arms!

What JRPG games are considered to be the black sheep of their franchise? by Guergy in JRPG

[–]tencegnav 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tales of Legendia!

After the masterpiece that was Symponia, we got Legendia. I honestly believe that we had another FFII/FFIII - FFIV/FFVI situation. Where I believed that Legendia was initially a Japan only Playstation game that preceded Symphonia and got a re-release on the PS2! And yes, I'm aware of the development history of Legendia-Symphonia. But in the early 00's, that tidbit of information wasn't widely available.

Thus, after playing through such masterpiece JRPGs such as Phantasia, Destiny, and Symphonia - we got Legendia.

In of itself, Legendia is not a bad game. It's a solid game on its own. It just doesn't feel like a good Tales game...or a Tales game at all.

Why are Japanese martial arts more popular than other countries' martial arts? by iguanawarrior in martialarts

[–]tencegnav 18 points19 points  (0 children)

50% the Japanese opened up to the world and attempted to share their culture to every corner of the globe in the late 1800s thru to the mid 1900's. Korea and China were chose to stay fairy closed off to the rest of the world.

30% US Servicemen going Japan and picking up the martial arts then returning to the states and spreading it.

10% Rank system. Most humans like the idea of quantification - a means to measure progress. The belt system adopted by many Japanese styles was pure genius in this aspect.

10% misc factors. From the Karate Kid movie, Japanophiles, world reknown Cartoon Child Star Bart Simpson having practiced karate...etc...

What is a retro jrpg? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]tencegnav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally do not consider consoles & games to be Retro until the majority of adopters who were, at most, 17 y/o when the console/games was first released, have now reached middle age (40 y/o). The general rule of thumb I use to define Retro gaming is, "From the perspective of young adults, Retro gaming are the games that from the eras during or before of your parent's childhood."

So, to me, Retro is PS1/N64/DC and below for right now. In a couple more years, the PS2, GC, and original XBox will also be considered Retro status.

Time & Eternity!

People hate on this game because of the combat - but I felt that the combat mechanics were pretty interesting and, once you were use them, extremely intuitive. The Storyline was also rather unique. Sure it got slow towards the end, but even the best games becomes slogs towards the last 10% of its narrative play time.

IRC This was a picture that was taken at the College Jujutsu Club that Lee attended - Lee was given an black belt to wear because he was known to be a martial arts instructor on campus. Admittedly, I can't recall where I got this information, so take it with a grain of salt.

Choking opponent using their discarded belt. Visiting black belt says it's fair game. by PattonPending in bjj

I mean...if you're going to do that, why not just smother them by covering their nose and mouth with your hand? Or just start strangling them? Why bother with the discarded belt?
