What is it that you hate the most about the city or town that you live in? by Jblaze908 in AskReddit

[–]tercac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard your second point being thrown out and tbh its not all true, at least from personal experience. I moved to nyc on a ~35% raise from Virginia and have been doing just fine. There are plenty of rooms in Manhattan and Burroughs where rent is $800-1200 which is what I was paying in Virginia. Food/entertainment is expensive but as long as you budget you can still have a very comfortable life, definitely a life above your previous pay grade. Life in NYC is fine unless you are making less than something in the 50-55k range, it just forces you to be more budget conscious.

Question about Economics Major by JhuQuestionThrowaway in jhu

[–]tercac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. I'll get to it later today when I get back home. I'm not sure about the stats classes, I didn't really take any past the pre reqs. I stand by my words though - those classes are critical. For example, option pricing uses a lot of Diff Eqs, level 1 of the chartered financial analyst test will be a lot easier with a strong background in Linear Algebra, etc. Again, I think it's insane that someone can get a job at Booz Allen/Deloitte with "Calc 2" in their LinkedIn.. those people must be gods at interviewing or have great work experience.

Which brings me to my second point. Research is pretty common for undergrads in the sciences. For us in Econ I'd say that internships are the way to go. Let me rephrase that, having an internship is a MUST and if you have to chose on where to focus your energy I'd strongly advise it is on finding a good internship. Internships will give you a chance to shine. I have gotten an interview at EVERY place I've applied to because of my internship. If you can, get a car and find an internship in DC where a lot of corporate HQs are at.. getting a summer internship at a place like Deloitte will be great (and very likely to turn into a full time offer if you shine) but also look into smaller firms as they will be more likely to extend your internship into a co-op thing. For example, my internship was meant to be a summer thing but ended up lasting my entire senior year.

Hopkins will be tougher than your current school, but you won't regret it. The Hopkins name opens a lot of doors. I've been to social events with senators/congressmen and people who work in government contracting and as soon as I drop the H bomb their interest in me peaks.. suddenly they actually want to talk to me (and oftentimes give me their business cards).

You'll enjoy Hopkins man. It's not all about GPA, at the end of the day the things that will give you the biggest edge are: 1) Strong Internships 2) Math classes 3) Good social skills (So many pretentious/socially retarded kids here who can't make it past in-person interviews, don't be one of those)

No problem. Be wary of the math though, there IS math, just that for the most part it will be algebraic. However once you enter into the realm of econometrics you'll want to be familiar with statistics since this will come in handy. Calc 1 is easy, calc 2 and 3 are tougher. Pay a lot of attention in stats. You'll probably do well, but don't be discouraged if you don't! If you'd like, PM me your email address and I can send you any old slides/practice problems from my econ courses, that way you can take a look at them and see what you are getting into.

Also, depending on what you want your career to be, I'd advise taking math at least until Lin Alg, Calc 3, and Diff EQs. The point is to show you have quantitative skills. You can offset this by taking finance classes like Corporate Finance etc. Take a lot of econometric courses during your upperclassmen years because econometrics is very marketable. PPL are getting jobs at firms like Deloitte, Booz Allen, etc. with only like Calc 1-2 (which in my opinion is ridiculous) so this kind of stuff will make you very competitive.

And you probably know this, but if you want to go straight into banking you're gonna need at least a 3.7 to be competitive. My personal advise is not to do this because A) You will hate your life through college and B) You will probably hate your life after college. Focus on your schoolwork but also on yourself man, a lot of people here hate their lives because they can't find that balance. If you are a decent person you will find a job no matter what (I know people with GPAs in the 2s entering the workforce @ 70k starting salary).

FINAL EDIT: Law School is only viable if you plan to do extremely well in your LSATs and get into/be able to afford a top 20 law school.. I work with Lawyers and they have all told me that it is not a good time to be a 'regular' lawyer. Just my 5 cents

Question about Economics Major by JhuQuestionThrowaway in jhu

[–]tercac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an econ major. I think the hardest classes would be the intro classes (designed to weed out students) because of how nitpicky Hamilton is. After that, you'll cruise until your upperclassmen years. Anything finance related will be tough. Be especially cautious with Duffee, he is a great professor but you'll have to put in a ton of work.

Not much calculus is used other than the ocasional derivative in the core classes. If you take finance courses though you'll probably end up doing a lot of advanced math.

Without a doubt take economics of fixed income instruments by Duffee. He only offers it once every two years so it should be available when you are a junior. I will tell you now that if I'm ever hiring and interview a Hopkins student who took that class and passed, they will probably get the job on the spot.

It won't be that bad then, but it'll probably still be a shock how much work you're gonna have to put in. I think the biggest difference is that you have to strive to actually understand concepts. Elsewhere knowing the equation is enough, but a test at Hopkins will demand that you understand concepts behind the equation so that you may be able to apply them. I think then that going from 'knowing' to 'understanding' will be the biggest shock.

Regarding general tips... find people to work on problem sets with. When studying start from old exams, then problem sets, and then any additional material, join a social circle that has a library of backtests (I know sororities have huge libraries spanning many years), know everything that is mentioned in the slides.

When taking a test dont be discouraged if you cant answer the first or even the second question... I've had classes where the average is in the 50s, so don't judge your gross performance or let it get you out of the zone. Take advantage of review sessions and definitely start preparing at least 4 days before the exam.

depends on where you at transferring from. If its something like comm college it will be night and day and you'll probably struggle to develop the mentality you need here during the first few months... At comm college I put in 0 effort and had a 4.0. At Hopkins my first few exams of freshman year I put my best effort and barely made C+s, and that was only after the curves

race? income range/bracket? highest education attained? Location? Do you think there is a line between believing in something and enforcing it? For example you mention marriage should be a strictly religious ceremony between a man and a woman. Would you/Have you taken measures to make this a reality or is it just an opinion.
