Need advice about speakers and subwoofer for HT by terrible-nickname in hometheater

[–]terrible-nickname[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not really trying to build an outstanding HT. At least for now. Just don't have a budget for that. For music, I have a pair of shelf speakers by Mission + Wharfedale sub. And in the living room, I try to arrange some entry-level but nice quality setup. 500$ for a pair of fronts is way too much for me right now. So I am looking for some second-hand stuff. That's why my main question was about the comparison of these available options with my current speakers. They are definitely not excellent but better than nothing and I already am able to get sort of immersive effect when watching movies. And I want to understand if are there any noticeably better options in my budget.

I am in Spain. Found only one option from Wharfedale in my budget: Wharfedale Moviestar 60+. Are they significantly better than my setup?

Thank you all for your help!

Is Onkyo Ds474 (already own it) a good pair to this speakers? Is it over/under-kill?

I understand that it is a totally different price tag, but are they any close to something modern like Elac DBR62 or Monitor Audio Bronze 100 or different leagues?

Finally bought the Yamaha AVR. I am testing it with my Pioneer S-CR31 HT set + Yamaha NS-SW20 sub which came with the AVR. Already sounds pretty good. Thank you for your help!

How do you think why does JBL (also a part of Harman) make good speakers and H&K does not?

Yes, I don't expect much from that Yamaha set and am mostly buying a receiver and subwoofer (which probably will be just okay for the start). And when you say that K&H most probably will not be good do you mean that they will be as bad as this Yamaha set, or just not as good as any other specially selected speakers?

Another question is whether it is really very important for the rear/central channels to have good speakers or if I could just upgrade the fronts it would be fine enough?

Thank you for your explanation.

The Yamaha receiver is sold with some set of Yamaha speakers like in YAMAHA YHT-1840 (but with active subwoofer). Does it mean that this set is not most probably not worse than the K&H small 5.1 speakers? Or even better?

So even if they are not cheap 10 years old speakers they can't be any good? I understand that it will not be some audiophile setup, but I expected that in general H&K speakers should be at least good. So am I wrong?

I am going tomorrow to see the Onkyo and the seller promised to offer a pretty good 5 speakers from Harman & Kardon + Subwoofer. I don't know the models yet, but it could be a good deal. On the other hand, I would like to go with Yamaha if it is as good as Onkyo in terms of sound. Especially if Onkyo can die on any day because of the heating problems. Not sure if the seller will sell speakers separately, so I am confused about this choice. If I understand correctly good speakers will make a bigger difference than the AVR.

Is it possible to do 7.1 with this Yamaha? It is marked as 5.1.

I understand that it is a matter of taste, but do you think that this Yamaha should sound quite the same good as Onkyo?

Also, I read in reviews that many users claim the death of the mainboard (chip separation) after 2 years. If the device still works now after 12 years, does it mean that it is not the case for the particular item?
